DISCOVERING CORNWALL 11-15 JUNE 2017 DISCOVERING CORNWALL - 2017 WITH THE CHEMIN NEUF COMMUNITY What is “Discovering Cornwall” and where are we going to stay? All of Cornwall is beautiful, North and South. But it is too big and too rich to be known within five days. That is why the Chemin-Neuf Community is inviting you to “Discovering Cornwall”, an opportunity for you to have an overview of this part of the UK. Over 5 days, with the help of local parishioners who are immersed in Cornish culture and history, you will have the opportunity to discover a selection of four main aspects of Cornwall. These are: Bodmin Moor with its ancient silver and tin mines The opportunity to visit and pray in some nearby spiritual Centres (Catholic, Anglican or Methodist) Discover some gorgeous scenery along the coastal footpath (From Lansallos to Lantic Bay or from Constantine Bay to Harlyn Bay) and their historic fishing villages (Looe, Polperro), Appreciate a typical English Castle and its gardens like the well-known National Trust Lanhydrock Castle with its Garden All of this will take place within a spiritual context as we will stay in a Chemin Neuf Community house, which was a former Carmelite Monastery, called Sclerder Abbey. Since its foundation in 1868 it has been a place of prayer and this tradition is maintained today by the Chemin Neuf Community. You will experience one of these famous “Thin places”1 where the stones are soaked in prayer. It nestles in an unspoiled stretch of the southern Cornish coast near Looe. You will also be invited to share the daily fraternal life of the Abbey and have morning and afternoon (Ecumenical) prayer every day and, whenever possible, be offered a Mass or Anglican Eucharist. This will be an opportunity for you to improve your English conversation. Please find attached some more practical information on “ DISCOVERING CORNWALL” 2017. Looking forward to welcoming you at Sclerder Abbey, J.P. Carosin 1 “Thin Place” means a place where Heaven and Earth are close. DISCOVERING CORNWALL 11-15 JUNE 2017 PRACTICAL INFORMATION DATES AND VENUE: From Sunday 11th (5:00pm) to Thursday 15th (2:30pm) of June 2017 at Sclerder Abbey, Looe. ACCOMMODATION: The old monastery has been refurbished and complies with local safety regulations. You can choose either a single or a double room. Note that we have chosen to pursue the simple life of our predecessors; it's why all participants will have to share the communal toilets and showers provided on each floor. HOW TO GET TO SCLERDER? There are many ways (by Air, by Sea, by Train or by Bus) to get to Sclerder; but in any case we will be ready to help you to arrive safely. The nearest airports are Bristol, Exeter and Newquay. But you will have to take two or three trains or a bus to get from there to Looe. There is a Ferry from Brittany (Roscoff) to Plymouth, from where you can either drive or take a bus (No 73) to Looe or Camping Carradon (500m from Sclerder). You could also take a train to Liskeard Station and then the link to Looe or a taxi to Sclerder. NB: In any case please send us your travel plans in advance THE FINANCIAL ASPECTS: We would appreciate a donation for the full board accommodation. The suggested amount is between £150 to £200 per person for the 5 days. This is an indication but should not discourage anyone from joining us. UK Tax Payers are invited to sign a Gift Aid Form2. We will also share the traveling expenses to and from the places we visit; say £30 to £40 per person for the 5 days. (If you are coming by car, please let us know if you are prepared to give lifts to other people when we go out on visits) Entrance fees to National Trust properties and other places visited are not included. So make provision for another £15 per person. Feel free to write, e-mail or call us for further information: (attn: J.P.
