u companions u 2018 – 2019 Dear Companions, On behalf of my Jesuit brothers, I THANK YOU for walking with us as steadfast partners in these grace-filled ministries. The kindness in your hearts and the love you show through all of YOUR good works, inspires me personally and keeps a flame burning throughout the church and in our Jesuit institutions. The word “Companions” used in my salutation, which we use to describe many of our events honoring your generous gifts of time, talent, and treasure, was not selected randomly. Indeed St. Ignatius’s closest and dearest friends with whom he began the Society, he referred to as his “Companions.” Later as his ideas evolved, he intentionally used a related word, “accompaniment,” to describe the pastoral activity we are all called upon to undertake—accompanying our brothers and sisters along their journey and in their time of need. As we publish this Honor Roll, I am reminded of the recently communicated Universal Apostolic Preferences (UAPs) released by our Superior General, Fr. Arturo Sosa, SJ, with the support of Pope Francis. This document provides guidance to all of us to focus our attentions on the following pursuits: leading people to Christ by promoting discernment and the Spiritual Exercises; walking with the excluded; caring for our common home; and journeying with youth. He said “The UAPs should help sharpen our focus on what’s really central to our mission at this point in history.” Pope Francis said the preferences “are in harmony with the present priorities of the church.” Our ability to serve in this way is only made possible through the partnership with you, our companions. May we see the light on this path and use it to fulfill the promises of the UAPs in the coming decade. Reviewing this Honor Roll I feel profoundly grateful that you have accompanied the Society of Jesus through your support of our works in the past and strengthened those works for the future. Together we will continue with Fr. Sosa’s guidance and prayers, to give ourselves to those important needs. Though looking forward is my preference, I offer this Honor Roll for your review as a chance to look in hindsight, and to appreciate your generous gifts to the Society and to the many noble works of my brother Jesuits and our lay partners. You remain our cherished Companions, Brian G. Paulson, SJ Provincial, Midwest Province Please note: We greatly appreciate gifts of all amounts, and we’ve made every effort to ensure the accuracy of this list. If there is an error in the listing of your name, or if you made a gift and are not listed, please accept our sincere apologies and write [email protected] or call 773-975-6922 so we can correct the mistake. 2 HONOR ROLL OF COMPANIONS (Total giving through June 30, 2019) Frank Majka Ignatius Loyola Circle Anonymous Francis Xavier Circle ($1,000,000 +) Rosemary McNeeve ($500K+) Vincent Beckman Patricia Montague Leonard and Hilda Bartell Foundation Peter and Betty Bell Paula Niklas Dr. Herbert Batt Helen Brach Foundation F.
