Virginia Lake Call for Artist Submissions City of Reno – Public Art Committee presentation Adrian Litman Born in 1948, I started to learn about art at a very early age, playing with colors and art materials in my father's Art Design and Restoration studio. In 1963, I was accepted in the Fine Arts High School N. Tonitza in Bucharest, Romania where I studied art techniques including drawing, painting, graphics, engraving, sculpture, fresco, mosaic and ceramics. After finishing the Fine Art High School, I attended the University of Bucharest Art Institute, graduating in 1974 with a Masters degree in Graphic Arts Design. Since 1980 when I relocated to California, I worked as a Graphic Designer and Art Director in the San Francisco Bay Area until 2002 when I retired from the corporate world and started Adrian Susnea Litman Art & Design Studio. I create an eclectic body of artwork for galleries and work on commissioned projects for Civic Public Art, Corporate and private clients, including custom paintings, murals, frescoes, mosaics, sculptures, stained glass panels, fountains and wall treatments, all of which facilitate the harmonious integration of art with architecture. As a Northern California artist, I welcome the opportunity to create a few artwork designs, using symbolic elements of significance, reflecting the values and culture of the community surrounding the lake. As a basic principle, I create public art designs with flexibility in order to allow the project stakeholders and community input and participation. For durability and ease of maintenance I propose creating functional and durable designs using materials like stainless steel, bronze, colorful powder coated steel and porcelain mosaic, adequate for safe public use. Previous large scale works • City of Geyserville, CA - Sculpture Trail Exhibit - Cosmic Fusion, 2016 • City of Milpitas, CA - The Transit Shelter Public Art project - Birds of Paradise, 2011 • City of Fremont, CA - Kaiser Permanente Hospital - Phoenix resurrection, 2012 Sculpture 1 Sculpture 2 Sculpture-1 - Interactive stainless steel structure - Budget - $12,000 - $15,000 Sculpture-2 - Iconic organic looking sculpture - Budget - $10,000 - $12,000 Site selection – location is flexible and will take consideration from community input Sculpture 3 Sculpture 4 • Sculpture-3 - Electric poles Stainless steel base with laser cut symbolic elements - Budget - $1,200 - $1,500 each. • Sculpture-4 - Kinetic stainless steel kinetic sculpture - Budget - $12,000 - $15,000 • A series of smaller sculptures can be created in a budget range of $5,000 - $7,000 each. • Site selection – location is flexible and will take consideration from community input ARTECLETTICA and MOUNTAIN FORGE MISSION To design and hand-forge high quality metal artwork with a heightened level of detail through a fusion of Old World craft and contemporary aesthetics using traditional and modern techniques with handmade and industrial tools and machinery. Our response to this Call for Artists includes two separate proposals for consideration. The first, “Individuality no. 1” is an existing sculpture we just completed this year for the Reno Sculpture Fest working in collaboration with Mountain Forge Inc. The second is entitled “Solar Time”. Both are described separately below and we‟ve attached images and budgets for each proposal. We strongly feel that our eclectic style of art, and its distinctiveness, would draw people to this part of the park. Nonetheless, since this area sets lower down between the flower garden and the lake, the artwork would not interfere with the neighboring views across the lake. Previous large scale works • Center Creek Park, Reno, NV – Svirgola (ARTECLETTICA) 2006 • Sculptural Tribute to the Indians of Martis Valley Truckee, CA – Time (Mountain Forge) 2006 • Seven Seas Park, Sunnyvale, CA - Under the7 Seas (ARTECLETTICA) Individuality no. 1 This existing sculpture, bringing together the unique talents of Arteclettica in mixed media and Mountain Forge in metal work, is the first of a preconceived sculptural series entitled “Individuality”. Its dimensions are 12‟high (H) x 14‟long (L) x 4‟wide (W). The concept of this series is a celebration of individuality as well as interdependence. Each individual, and each sculpture, is unique and special, deserving our attention and consideration. Nonetheless, “no man is an island”. If we are able to come together to make a contribution to the whole, while still respecting each others individuality, we can achieve greatness. This sculpture is low maintenance and would only require periodic cleaning. It is, as stated, already completed and ready to be installed. So, the date of completion would be soon after the awarding of the contract in late August. The only modifications to the sculpture would be the addition of pointed objects along the top surfaces as a bird deterrent. Also, we would provide a permanent footing with the proper attachments to accept the sculpture engineered by a registered engineer in Nevada. The materials used in its fabrication are metal including galvanized steel, stainless steel, powder coated and painted steel as well as mosaic including reclaimed natural stone, rock, and ceramic which was applied with mortar and grouted with concrete based materials to the main body of galvanized steel. Individuality no. 1 12‟high (H) x 14‟long (L) x 4‟wide (W) Individuality no. 1 12‟high (H) x 14‟long (L) x 4‟wide (W) Site selection Budget The budget for Individuality no. 1 is $50,000 itemized as follows: Design, administrative costs, and layout: $1000 Insurance: $500 Engineering: $800 Material: Total of $11,250 itemized as follows Mild steel: $2500 Mesh: $1250 Stainless steel: $5000 Mosaic, including natural stone, ceramic, and rock: $2000 Mortar and grout: $300 Paint, sealer, misc. disposal materials: $200 Galvanizing: $2100 Powder coating: $650 Fabrication: $26,200 Site Preparation and footing: $3500 Mobilization, delivery, and Installation: $4000 Solar time This proposed sculptural piece includes an assemblage of two groups of three unique seats each, for a total of six. The size of each seat is 3‟-0”H x 2‟- 0”L x 2‟-2”W. The seats are aligned towards a central totem element with a south facing sundial and topped with the initials VL which is added both as a decorative element and a bird deterrent. Its dimensions are 11‟-9”H x 3‟- 0”L x 2‟-0”W. The 3 sided base of the totem could provide a nice tablet for a visual historical display and/or information relating to the Virginia Lake Park. The concept of this group is to provide an artistically inviting seating area which through its form and decorative elements respects the history of the Reno area. This proposal is also low maintenance, only to be cleaned as necessary. The fabrication would commence after the awarding of the contract in late August and would take approximately 4-6 weeks to complete, and the installation could be completed in late October, so the date of completion would be before November 1, 2016. The construction method of the sculptures would be similar, and of the same quality, as the above mentioned work, and consist of a internal framework of either welded steel, wood or polyethylene; a metal armature; layered concrete or fiberglass resin which would be handsomely adorned with a variety of weather-resistant materials appropriate for exterior use including mosaic (stone, glass, tile, and various reclaimed objects), painted, and metal elements. Once again, we plan on contracting with Mountain Forge Inc. for all of the metal work and the installation. Solar Time 12‟high (H) x 2‟ (L) x 2‟wide (W) Solar Time (benches) 3‟high (H) x 2‟ (L) x 6‟wide (W) Budget The total estimated budget for the Solar Time proposal is $50,000 itemized as follows: Design, administrative costs, scheduling, and layout: $1000 Insurance: $500 Engineering: $800 Material: Total of $13,200 itemized as follows Metal: $6000 Steel mesh: $1000 Fiberglass, foam, wood: $2000 Mosaic, mixed media: $4000 Paint, sealer, misc. disposables: $200 Fabrication: $25,500 Site Preparation and footing: $3000 Mobilization, delivery, and Installation: $3500 Contingencies (5%): $2500 Brett Moten, Infinity Forge While Brett Moten was born in Bronxville, New York, he spent his childhood in the artful environment of Santa Fe, New Mexico. After nurturing his artistic talents in New Mexico, Brett moved to Reno as a young adult and remains an avid participant in most of the outdoor activities available within and around the Lake Tahoe basin. Brett‟s studio, Infinity Forge is located in Reno, Nevada where he specializes in art, architectural work, blacksmithing and fabrication of ferrous and non-ferrous metals. As an Artist Blacksmith, Brett transforms metals using machines, tools and a variety of manufacturing techniques, all of which allow for limitless possibilities of artistic expression. In addition to his artworks, Brett has a special interest in ferric relics of early American and European craftsmen. In 2012, using hammers, anvil, and fire, as well as other smithing equipment, Brett transformed reclaimed wrought iron into a rocking chair that is both functional and a piece of art. This particular work, which he collaborated on with a fellow smith, was chosen for the “People‟s Choice” awards at both the California Blacksmith Associations (“CBA”) and the Artist Blacksmiths of North America‟s (“ABANA”) conferences. In addition, Brett was presented with an “Award for Excellence” from ABANA for this contribution to the
