superll)! arcade When the sun goes doVff'n Superfly During Jazzfest Tyler Hernandez arcade editor We all know Jazz Fest is a six-day music extravaganza that will keep you out and entertained all day long. The festival's only downfall is that it just seems to end entirely too early. When seven o'clock rolls around, the bands begin to pack up and head home, leaving fans want- ing more. Luckily enough, the good people at Superfly Productions, the masterminds behind Bonnaroo, provide a cure for the musical itch left when the sun goes down on the Fairgrounds. That cure comes in the form of the Superfly During Jazzfest Concert Series. Spanning nine days and coinciding with the annual Jazz and Heri- tage Festival, Superfly During Jazzfest is a series of concerts featuring a wide variety of artists ranging from local favorites to nationally renowned acts. The nighttime shows take place at some of the city's best venue and encompass such a variety of musical tastes that, for many, the event has become an integral part of the Jazz Fest experi- ence. With past performers including names like Ben Harper, Gov't Mule and Medeski Martin, this year's schedule continues the tradi- tions of musical quality and diversity the show has established in years past. Garage Medeski (featuring Stanton Moore, Mike Dillon, Skerik, and John Medeski), The Radiators, Jurassic 5, Galactic and Robert Randolph are all set to perform this year and make up just a fraction of the talent on the schedule in what is being called a historic year for Jazz Fest. Hurricane Katrina affected New Orleans deeply, and many of the venues that usually host Superfly artists closed as a consequence. Promoters were forced to replace locations such as the dearly departed Twi-Ro-Pa with six others including d.b.a., One Eyed Jack's, Republic New Orleans and Preservation Hall. But while venue availability, or lack thereof, made scheduling shows more difficult this year than in the past, there was certainly no a shortage of artists willing to perform. "People want to play New Orleans," president of Superfly Jonathan l Cll ll\11 .\ Cl! セ i ャ ャ | A I• I I\\ I>< ll l'l I \ I l 1111 I \\Ill\ I\\ I> Mayers explained. "They really want to come and support the city Robert Randolph will join the Meters for a special anniversary performance. and the community." To aid in New Orleans' reconstruction efforts, Superfly has planned Friday, April 28 a series of concerts this year that will act as charity benefits. These Garage A. Thursday, May 4 This year, Superfly During Jazzfest celebrates its 10th anniversary, The Greyboy Allstars - Riverboat Cajun Queen (Canal Street Warf), Doors: 7:30 p.m. and a number of events are planned to commemorate the landmark.
