Florida 33957 ISLANDER • Friday, Nov. 20, 1998 - 3 The Front Page City Council moves Passing the gavel ahead with $ 34 million sewer system By WENDY HUMPHREY The new City Council took another step forward in its mammoth $34 million sewer system Tuesday by adopting a resolution approving an update to both the facili- ties proposed and the financing plan. Approval was needed for the update to the plans in order to he able to apply for a state government grant from the State Revolving Fund. This grant may fund up to 3 percent of the project. Other grants may be obtained through different state and county agencies, but most of the cost will be funded through ad valorem taxes on properties and through collection fees. In a referendum vote earlier this year, Sanibel residents approved pledging $20.4 million in ad valorem taxes for expansion and improvements to the sewer system. The remaining costs will be funded through connection and transmission fees. City Council members heard the now-familiar arguments against the proposed plan. Sanibel resident Ray Grizzell, who calls himself The Sewer Man, once again contended that all sewage should be piped off the island to be treated in a facility in South Fort Myers. Pumping sewage off the island would increase the cost by 42 percent, according to an estimate by the city's consultant, Gerry Hartman.
