JOB DESCRIPTION CONSULTANT IN ORAL AND MAXILLOFACIAL SURGERY WITH SPECIAL INTEREST IN ONCOLOGY & RECONSTRUCTION This is a replacement post for current incumbent, Mr. Mazhar Iqbal who has secured a post for family reasons closer to his home in North Wales. The post will become vacant from mid-October 2020. Currently the post is based at Wythenshawe hospitals with additional clinical sessions at Stepping Hill Hospital, Stockport and MDT and Clinic at the Christie Hospital, Manchester. Maxillofacial Surgery and Head and Neck Oncological services in Manchester are undergoing re-organization/transformation into a single operational site. The post holder will be expected to accommodate their sessions to fit into the new service. This post offers the opportunity to work within a major teaching hospital adjacent to one of the largest university campuses in Western Europe, in collaboration with the Medical School and Dental School of Manchester. There are good prospects for research and teaching at all levels and the development of special interests at a tertiary level. The post demands an individual who has recognised postgraduate training in Oral and Maxillofacial surgery, has obtained the Intercollegiate Exit FRCS(OMFS) It is desirable that the individual has FDSRCS or MFDSRCS. The appointee will have a collaborative subspecialty interest in oncology and reconstructive surgery. The post will be responsible for the management of the Head and Neck Cancer Manchester through the hospitals of Manchester Royal Infirmary and Manchester Children’s Hospitals. Elective operating will be undertaken at the Central site and shall arise from the multi-disciplinary Head and Neck clinic at Manchester Royal Infirmary any general clinics, the University of Manchester Dental Hospital, or any other satellite facilities deemed appropriate. The contract for this post will be held with the Surgical Division of Wythenshawe Hospital. The Clinical Lead/ Manager for Maxillofacial Surgery at the Wythenshawe is Mr and the Directorate Manager is Julia Mitchell. Please note that the Maxillofacial Surgery services between Wythenshawe and MRI are currently undergoing transformation with a view to functioning as a single unit The clinical programmed activity for the current post is split across multiple sites. With reorganisation of Maxillofacial services across Greater Manchester there will be regular review of the current clinical sessions at MRI, Wythenshawe, Stepping Hill Hospital, and the Christie Hospital. The Oral and Maxillofacial Department at Wythenshawe The Oral & Maxillofacial Department of Wythenshawe currently has a service with a hub (apart from surgery on head and neck cancer patients) treating patients from the local area and hospitals in Stockport and Macclesfield. This post is partly funded on a service level agreement from Stockport and has clinical sessions, both outpatients and ambulant day case surgery at Stepping Hill Hospital Stockport. The South MDT is www.mft.nhs.uk Incorporating: Altrincham Hospital • Manchester Royal Eye Hospital • Manchester Royal Infirmary • Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital • Saint Mary’s Hospital • Trafford General Hospital • University Dental Hospital of Manchester • Wythenshawe Hospital • Withington Community Hospital • Community Services currently held at the Christie Hospital (the North MDT at North Manchester Hospital), there are plans to amalgamate all three MDT’s into a single Head and Neck MDT serving whole of Manchester. The consultant trauma on-call commitment for this post will be 1 in 11, cross covering both South and Central Manchester with a total population of 1.5 million. This includes the peripheral sites of Stockport Wigan and Macclesfield. The Central Manchester campus supports the major trauma centre in Salford. The Manchester Royal Infirmary is co-located with the Royal Manchester Eye Hospital and Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital within the same complex. The post holder will collaborate closely with Mr Blackburn, Mr Maranzano, Mr. Saunuddin and work in tandem with Mr Patel. There is a separate on-call arrangement for cover of microvascular reconstruction. All definitive head and neck cancer surgery (apart from diagnostic type work) is undertaken at the MRI Laboratory facilities are currently provided at both Wythenshawe Hospital and in Manchester Dental Hospital. Reconstruction for ENT resections is regularly undertaken. There is a strong collaboration of team working with ophthalmology and neurosurgery. Patients undergoing surgery are admitted to the Elective Treatment Centre / ward in Manchester Royal Infirmary which houses a specialised Head and Neck Surgical ward area, which is shared with ENT. This ward currently has 27 beds with separate single sex accommodation and some side rooms for inpatients. The Ward staff has a rolling programme of tracheostomy care training.
