Reflecting on this week’s sale, Holland said: “Trade has changed. This sale was unique because it always had great depth – the top end has got even better, but it’s not so strong at the bottom. There doesn’t seem to be the Europeans buying bottom-end horses, perhaps because of the strength of sterling. Tattersalls Ireland “But it’s still one of the most consistent sales and its two-year-old track record is the best.” It also achieves a very good clearance rate – 164 horses went through the ring yesterday, and only ten SEPTEMBER were friendless, meaning 94% found new homes for an aggregate of 5,842,100gns. The average of 36,930gns and median of 30,000gns were also healthy, and YEARLING despite slight changes to the format it seems likely the overall sale will show a slight improvement on last year. The sale ends today, when the first lot goes through the SALE ring at 11am. & NEW SIRES SHOWCASE FAYRUZ FIRES FOR PINHOOKERS 4 – 6 September 2007 A pinhooking punt to be proud of saw the team of Peter Molony and David Redvers turn a profit on a son of Fayruz (Lot 192). They had been attracted to the youngster last year Proven because he was a half-brother to another of their past purchases, multiple winner Tax Free, successful in the Gr.3 Palace House Stakes and recently third in the Gr.3 King Sires inc: George Stakes at Goodwood for trainer Dandy Nicholls. Having paid E78,000 for the Fayruz they consigned PIVOTAL, INVINCIBLE SPIRIT, him yesterday through Molony’s Rathmore Stud and GALILEO, ACCLAMATION, saw him make 120,000gns to a bid from John Gosden, who headed Nicholls on the line. BARATHEA, DANSILI, Fayruz, a 24-year-old who stood for E3,500 this year at the McEnery family’s Rossenarra Stud in County MONSUN, MONTJEU etc Kilkenny, sired the youngster after a mating with Grandel (Owington), who was unraced. Gosden’s fellow Newmarket trainer, Peter Chapple- New Hyam, was another investor at the higher end, paying 100,000gns for a Johannesburg colt (Lot 184) consigned by Dermot O’Rourke’s Plantation Stud. This Sires inc: one was foaled by the unraced mare Golden Flyer REFUSE TO BEND, (Machiavellian), whose dam Shir Dar was a Stakes winner in Europe and America. ONE COOL CAT, KHELEYF, CAN DO FOR IKAN AND IKTIDAR HAAFHD, INDIAN HAVEN, Alphabetical listing of horses under their dam’s names FALBRAV, ELUSIVE CITY etc tends to give vendors gaps between their journeys to the ring, but not when a breeder offers foals from a mare and her similarly-named daughter. Hence Martin Francis of Ballydrehid House in Tipperary 12 stakes winners endured “the most nerve-wracking five minutes of my life” when selling yearlings out of Ikan (Lot 209) and her in 2007 inc: dam Iktidar (Lot 210). Stressful it may have been, but lucrative too, as Ikan’s filly by Exceed And Excel CREACHADOIR, DIMENTICATA, realised 110,000gns to a bid from Dick O’Gorman, and VALBENNY etc., Iktidar’s daughter of Refuse To Bend achieved 95,000gns when bought by trainer Bryan Smart. All yearlings eligible for the Iktidar has been a wonderfully profitable mare, responsible for Qadar (Xaar), who topped this sale at 300,000 Tattersalls Ireland 250,000gns in 2003, but also Hazelhurst (110,000gns Sales Stakes 2008 in 2004), Follow The Flag (75,000gns in 2005) and Sir Ike (95,000gns last year). Subsequently Blaskey realised that one way of getting her feed into the racing industry was to get involved with a corner of it, so opted for pinhooking. She added: “We use a horse walker and walk them in hand, but prefer to leave the yearlings out as long as possible. These two were still in a field together on Friday. They are happy that way and exercise themselves, and they eat a natural diet that includes Blue Chip feed, so they get a steady growth rate and no problem with bones.
