Selbyana 7: 281-311 HERBARIUM SPECIMENS OF THE ORCHIDACEAE OF CENTRAL CENTRAL AMERICA - A CHECKLIST Emly S. Siegerist* As so often happens, the pursuit of one scientific endeavor leads to an­ other. While researching a project it came to mind that it would greatly sim­ plify a botanist's work if there were available a checklist of the specimens in various herbaria. Since I am interested primarily in the Orchidaceae of the central portion of Central America, i.e., Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, and Nicaragua, that area was delineated for this project. Some of the major herbaria in this country and Central America were visited, specimens photographed, or in some instances merely noted, and this list compiled. It is not purported to be a complete listing as by its very nature a herbarium must be in a state of fluidity - specimens always out on loan, new sheets constantly being added, others being studied at the parent insti­ tution. Therefore, this compilation represents the central Central American orchid specimens present on the days I visited the herbaria, not their com­ plete collection. Nevertheless, it has been made as comprehensive as possible. Four of the herbaria cited (lTIC, HNMN, NIC, and NY) were not visited by the author, but photographs, and in some instances drawings, were ac­ quired which serve as vouchers for the validity of their inclusion in this list. In any treatment of the Orchidaceae, the question of current nomencla­ ture arises. Not being a taxonomist, no attempt was made to verify the valid­ ity of the labels or annotation labels on the sheets. The list does, however, try to conform to the present thinking of taxonomists and therefore, as an example, Rhyncholaelia glauca will have its synonym Laelia glauca listed under it in parentheses. In an effort to conserve space, no cross index is provided. No attempt has been made to supply all of the synonymy of the spe­ cies. Only names under which specimens appear in the various herbaria, or those names still in common usage which have been reduced to synonymy have been included. Understandably, this work could not have been accomplished without the help and cooperation of many people.
