2012-2013 recipients: where are they now? Nadya Ahmed Nadya graduated from Nottingham Trent University in 2012 with a first class honours degree in English. It was here she developed her passion for journalism, writing for her university magazine, Platform, as a gaming and technology contributor going on to be fashion sub-editor for a brief period. She has completed work experience at The Independent, The Times and Zest while maintaining her own blog. Nadya is currently completing a Journalism Diversity Fund internship at The Nottingham Post. Course: PgDip newspaper journalism Centre: Nottingham Trent University Amna Bagadi Amna graduated from the London School of Economics with a BSc in social anthropology and a Masters in visual anthropology from the University of Manchester. She lived in Sudan in 2011 working in communications and editing copy and later moved to the Netherlands to edit a website to support a radio station in a media development organisation. Amna interned at Reuters before beginning her journalism studies and now works for Al Jazeera English as an assistant producer. Course: Multimedia journalism foundation course Centre: Press Association, London Nicholas Bieber Nicholas developed a passion for journalism in his earlier teenage years. He has already completed an extended diploma in media production at Northampton College and gained work experience with the Northampton Chronicle and Echo, LSN Media and Total Football. He also writes for student website Kettlemag.com and runs his own blog. Nicholas completed a weekly placement at the Daily Express features desk while studying for his NCTJ diploma, followed by a placement at ITV News. He currently works as a reporter for Northampton Herald and Post. Course: Fast-track multimedia journalism Centre: News Associates, London Victoria Bull Victoria began writing for the University of Birmingham’s student newspaper, Redbrick, while studying for a BA in English and American literature, before becoming an editorial assistant and finally being elected as deputy editor. Victoria has completed work experience at the Milton Keynes Citizen, the Croydon Guardian and the BBC. After achieving the NCTJ Diploma in Journalism, she now works as a trainee reporter with the Hemel Hempstead Gazette. Course: Fast-track multimedia journalism Centre: News Associates, London Dan Cooper Dan has a particular interest in sports journalism and has contributed to The Non-League Paper, Basingstoke Observer, adifferentleague.co.uk and footballitaliano.co.uk. He has also undertaken work experience at the Basingstoke Gazette, Sportsbeat and FourFourTwo magazine. Dan completed a work experience placement at Sky Sports News before securing his current job as a trainee reporter at the Newbury Weekly News. Course: Fast-track multimedia journalism Centre: News Associates, London Jonathan Jonathan graduated from the University of Leeds in 2011 with a PhD in the Cronshaw History of Art. He worked in student radio while studying a BA at Keele University and he is the founder and editor of online arts magazine artfist.org. Jonathan is currently on-course at Leeds Trinity University and contributes to Leeds Northern and the Yorkshire Voice. He has also completed a placement at The Guardian as part of their Positive Action scheme. Course: PgDip magazine journalism Centre: Leeds Trinity University Shân Ellis Shân is a published author and poet and a single mother to two young children. While studying for her NCTJ Diploma, she blogged for Britmums.co.uk and The Huffington Post. Shan currently works for the Eastern Daily Press and Norwich Evening News. She also publishes her own magazine, Autism Spectrum Digest. Course: Part-time multimedia journalism Centre: News Associates London Figen Gunes Having graduated from Yeditepe University in Istanbul with a first class honours degree in Journalism, Figen came to London and worked as a trainee reporter for the national Turkish newspaper Hurriyet’s London bureau. Since then, Figen has worked for the Dogan News Agency, the London Turkish Gazette and has had her worked published in the Daily Mail. Figen has a strong interest in investigative journalism and is now writing for The Big Issue. Course: Foundation in multimedia journalism Centre: Press Association, London Erinn Louise Kerr Erinn has undertaken a range of work placements in the north-east region and in Northern Ireland, including the Newcastle Chronicle, Journal and Sunday Sun, the Ballymena Guardian and the Hexham Courant. Erinn is currently studying at Press Association and hopes to pursue a career in political journalism. Course: Foundation course in multimedia journalism Centre: Press Association, Newcastle Anthony Lewis- Anthony originally wanted to be a lawyer but after becoming news editor of his Binns university magazine, he decided to pursue a career in journalism. He has written for chocolate company, Prestat, the Coventry Telegraph and contributes to various blogs, including his own. He is currently looking for work in the newspaper and magazine industry. Course: Fast-track multimedia journalism Centre: News Associates, London Sophie McCoid From Stoke-on-Trent, born and bred, Sophie always had a passion for journalism and has completed work experience across a variety of local papers, including the Newcastle Chronicle, Newcastle Journal, Sunderland Echo, South Shields Gazette and the Stoke-on-Trent Sentinel. While studying at Newcastle University, Sophie was involved in the student paper The Courier, writing for the news and comment sections weekly. Sophie currently works as a reporter for The Southport Visiter/Ormskirk Advertiser. Course: Foundation course in multimedia journalism Centre: Press Association, Newcastle Liam Moffett Liam Moffett has always wanted to be a journalist and his career goal is to become a war correspondent. He first got a taste for journalism aged ten, when he visited the BBC with his familial background greatly contributing to his interest in war and its associated politics. He has completed work experience, in both print and broadcast, at Radio Cardiff, The Forester and The Citizen. Liam is now working as a reporter for Merthyr Express, Rhymney Valley Express and Gwent Gazette. Course: Foundation course in multimedia journalism Centre: Press Association, Newcastle Andreas Mullings Originally from a Greek background living in Enfield and Tottenham, Andreas now lives in Leeds after completing a Politics (Bsc) degree at Brunel University. A passion for writing and a determined outlook on life have drawn him to pursue his goal of becoming a political correspondent. During his time after university, he has pursued placements with the Halifax Courier. Andreas will complete his journalism studies in November 2013. Course: PgDip print journalism Centre: Leeds Trinity University Rebecca Parker Becky aspired to be a newspaper journalist from a young age due to her fervent interest in both writing and politics. While studying for her English literature degree at Cardiff University she got involved in student media and became politically active, and realised that she wanted to follow her dream of getting involved in political journalism. She has completed work experience at a number of newspapers and magazines including the South Wales Evening Post and the Bristol Evening Post. Becky now works as a reporter at the Western Mercury. Course: PgDip journalism Centre: Cardiff University Khaleda Rahman Khaleda got involved with the student newspaper at University College London and realised that she wished to pursue a career in journalism. Since graduating, Khaleda has undertaken various work experience placements, including an internship at the Camden New Journal and West End Extra. Khaleda was the first person to complete a Journalism Diversity Fund sponsored internship with Newsquest and is now the journalism intern for the NCTJ. She returns to the News Shopper as a Newsquest trainee at the end of October. Course: Fast-track multimedia journalism Centre: News Associates, London Kathryn Kathryn wrote her first article for the student newspaper The Journal and later Richardson became a junior editor while studying for a BA at the University of Edinburgh. She has done work experience at the Sunderland Echo, Hartlepool Mail, Yorkshire Post and The Newcastle Journal. Kathryn now works as a reporter for The Dunfermline Press. Course: Fast-track multimedia journalism Centre: News Associates, London Lamiat Sabin Lamiat completed a 12-week journalism training course at Catch 22 Academy and secured a six-month placement at the Evening Standard prior to studying for her NCTJ diploma. Lamiat is currently doing freelance shifts with the Daily Express while applying for trainee reporter positions. Course: Fast-track multimedia journalism Centre: News Associates, London Sophie Mei Lan Sophie is an award-winning freelance journalist and researcher who has Slack experience working for ITN news, The Guardian, The Sunday Times, BBC local radio, Sheffield Newspapers and ITV local. She set up her own award-winning media company MEI International Ltd, an umbrella company for Verita Magazine and MEI Media. Sophie continues to edit and publish Verita Magazine and contributes art to the Yorkshire Weekly News Group. Course: PgDip Journalism Centre: University of Salford Richard Wilson Originally from Scunthorpe and living in London, Richard had previous experience in PR and completed work experience at Press Gazette, The Yorkshire Times and the Yorkshire Business Network. Richard currently works as a press officer for HealthCIC. He continues to contribute on a freelance basis to the Hackney Citizen and has been selected for a work placement with Sky News at the end of September.
