These were tempered with disappointment that the senior men’s teams were unable to turn strong training efforts and some good on field performances into the consistent success needed to achieve our potential. The Club welcomed back Women’s Cricket under the full Parramatta DCC banner, the players having taken the decision to return from the Joint Venture Parramatta/Blacktown structure of the previous few years. Thanks to new President Scott Reibelt and hardworking Secretary Craig Noble, the Club fielded 2 full women’s sides. The girls enjoyed playing in the Two Blues colours at the superb Merrylands Oval. We made it to our first ever Final, in Second Grade, where we ran into a red hot St George outfit. Regardless, finishing runners up was a great achievement. We look forward to increasing our female playing strength in future years and ultimately securing First Grade Standing. Skipper Mel Halton speaks to the crowd after the Women’s Final, with members of the team on the Merrylands Oval bike track Mark McLeod’s 5th Grade men performed well and benefited from an excellent arrangement with Epping Shires Club. Congratulations to the boys on a good year, and thanks to Epping for working with Parramatta and helping to create an environment for success for both clubs. Special thanks to Mark “Bluey” McLeod who reveled in the leadership of this side, and went from strength to strength. He is a great asset to our club. Angus Graham with another “pole” in the 5th Grade Quarterfinal 8 Our Junior Program, raised to a new high level as the rebranded Jaycar Parramatta Cricket Academy, achieved unprecedented success. Winning 3 titles, the Weblin Shield U15s, the Moore Shield U14s, and the Cawsey Shield U12s was an amazing effort by these PDCA Rep teams. Playing against men in the open age PDCA B4 and B10 competitions was a superb development opportunity for the Academy boys. Winning both those Men’s competitions was an exceptional bonus. Lead by coaches Paul Calvert, a successful ex Parramatta First Grader with Matt Roughan, an experienced junior AFL and cricket coach, the program successfully developed young cricketers to prepare them for club and representative cricket. Our gratitude to the PDCA for the close working relationship which has been a critical factor to the successes of both the PDCA and PDCA Junior Rep.s. Many of these boys will become good Premier Grade Cricketers in the future, and we are convinced some can go on to join Sean Abbott as Senior Representative Players from our District. Sean Abbott in Sydney Sixers gear enjoys some time with Paul Calvert and the Jaycar Parramatta Cricket Academy This Winter, Owen Simonsen and Tim Ward were selected in the NSW Under 19 Academy, and Jacob Workman and Hamish Starr (identified by Parra’s Grenfell talent scout Ray Smith) were selected in the NSW Under 17 Academy. Our other Men’s Grades did not achieve the results we aimed for. Training attendances, commitment and effort were excellent. Congratulations to Coach Jason Coleman who, in his first year as Head Coach, produced the kind of training environment we need. However, playing performances and fielding standards were inconsistent. Fielding was particularly crucial in First Grade where the competition is currently using a Kookaburra Turf Ball, which few pace bowlers in Sydney can swing or seam. Dropped catches are therefore more costly than ever. Our district has a wonderful talent pool and our potential is much higher than a Club Championship 14th place. That being said, the First Grade’s 13th place belies the closeness of the competition whereby the team was still in contention for a Finals position into the last round. The side provided some spectacular moments such as the opening partnership of 291 between Brenton Cherry (180) and Will Affleck (113*) which threatened the all-time record opening partnership of 219 between Doug Walters and Bruce Neill back in the 1970s. Seconds 11th place on the ladder, and 3rds 15th were below par, while 4ths were right in the race till the very end. Such is the closeness of these competitions at present that the margin between making finals or not is wafer thin. Our club needs to find the improvement in quality of performance, and the toughness and commitment needed in a close contest, to make the difference between success and disappointment. 9 Congratulations to Evan Pitt and Trent Crittenden who were named worthy Joint Winners of our second Cumberland Medal, the Players’ Player Award. Their outstanding performances are recorded in this report. Josh Marquez snares a brilliant catch in the 5th Grade Quarterfinal. Outside of our regular playing performances, Life Member Greg Davidson continued his rise in the umpiring ranks with a strong year on the National Umpiring Panel. Now a full time umpire, Davo umpired Sheffield Shield, Domestic One Day (Matador) Cup, and umpired in the Big Bash now in its 5th season. Bravo Davo! Baulkham Hills and Parramatta Junior Rod Tucker continued his outstanding efforts as a world class umpire. This year Rod was selected to umpire the inaugural World T20 Cup Final won by the West Indies. Congratulations Budgie! A big vote of thanks to Holroyd City Council for its commitment to its staff in supporting Davo in his quest. We look forward to the next chapter for Greg, hopefully International opportunities will be on the near horizon.
