We move into a new decade and a new venue. We welcome our new Production Manager, Robin Tinani. And.... for the first time ever, we have cancelled Festival 2020. It is obviously the right decision to make, although it is a huge understatement to say that all the registrants, teachers, parents, volunteers and Board of Directors are disappointed that we have had to take this decision. But....on a lighter note...... we would be remiss if we did not thank those who have been our solid supporters for so many years. Luther College has long been the home of the Regina Music Festival. They were always supportive and accommodating. Without them, the festival could not have been produced year after year. Also, in that same timeframe, we were supported by St. John’s Music and Yamaha, our long time supplier of pianos. In that same “era”, Karen Klassen was our production manager and guided us through the movement from paper registrations to online. The Board of Directors has been fuelled by the efforts of Dianne Swanson, Robin Swales and Doris Lazecki who might blush if we mentioned how many years they have been the core of the board. Gord Kerfoot has been our adjudicator liaison for many years. His efforts have helped earn us glowing references from past adjudicators because he, along with so many others, has made their time with the Regina festival a warm and welcoming experience. We have a “brand”! Of course, this brand could not have been earned without the efforts of so many volunteers who have worked as Door Monitors, Secretaries, and the ‘behind- the-scenes” workers who do proof-reading, assemble binders and input data. Flora Tyler has done a marvellous job of finding and coordinating our volunteers. She works mostly in the background but is an essential part of the group that produces the festival year after year. The Celebrating Excellence receptions could not have happened without her. There is a specialized, albeit anonymous group of volunteers that needs to be acknowledged. Each year a team of scrutineers review the registrations to make sure that the participant has chosen the correct class(es). Then schedulers fit all registrations into the available time slots. This is an intensive effort in early February. Thank you barely covers the efforts put in by these volunteers who lay the foundation each year for a successful festival for all of our participants. Debbie Runge has been our Treasurer for three years, and we will miss her as she is moving to be close to her new grandchild. If any of you reading this would like to volunteer to step in as Treasurer, please let us know. We do have new board members who have already stepped up: Zina Scott assumes responsibility for marketing communications, and Bill Sgrazzutti joins Heather Gosselin and Robin Swales working on scholarships. If you would like to join our “merry band” on the Board that would be great! Last year, Adria McCulloch and the gala committee launched the Giving Back Gala. Without Adria’s role as artistic director of this event, we would not have been able to score such a great success. The Gala is a unique evening of entertainment (and fundraising). Alumni of the Regina Music Festival, who now excel in other professions, dusted off their musical talents. They not only performed for us, but spoke of the importance of the festival experience in their adult lives. The Giving Back Gala is coming back. Keep the Date! 6th of November 2020. In this unprecedented time, take care of yourself and your loved ones. Keep Practicing! Susan Gorges Regina Music Festival Association President 2 3 4 Get Acquainted with the Regina Music Festival The Music Festival has been held in Regina for the benefit of our young musicians for decades. It is organized and produced by a volunteer board. The festival is financed by entry fees and corporate and individual donations. Hundreds of hours are involved in organizing the festival from booking facilities, registration, data checking, scheduling, finding volunteers, printing adjudication sheets, obtaining scholarships, program compilation and many other activities. The board is always looking for help and would welcome your assistance. The RMFA is a non-profit corporation and a registered charity. We welcome donations to assist us in our operations OR to be awarded to students in the form of scholarships. The Board, on the recommendation of the adjudicators, distributes scholarships totaling over $20,000 yearly. FESTIVAL OFFICE During the year we do not have a physical office; however during the festival competitions at the Conservatory of Performing Arts, University of Regina, there is an office in Room 130. Please call 306-585-8589 to leave a message or contact us by email at [email protected] or through our website www.reginamusicfestival.org. PROGRAMS outlining the festival competitions are available download from our website www.reginamusicfestival.org. WARM-UP FACILITIES Space will be available at the Conservatory of Performing Arts to permit our Brass, Woodwind, String and Vocal competitors to warm up. Please check for signs when you reach the Conservatory or ask at the Festival Office. No warm up space is provided for pianists. Please remember the warm-up space is not intended as a rehearsal space, and personal items are left there unattended at your own risk ADMISSION to all festival venues and competitions is FREE, but donations are encouraged and appreciated. ADJUDICATION: Professional adjudicators are hired by our governing organization, the Saskatchewan Music Festival Association. These adjudicators are employed to provide their expert opinion on each student’s performance. Firstly, they will provide a written assessment of each performance. Secondly, they will verbally address the performers and offer constructive advice. First and second place winners and the respective marks will be announced by the adjudicator at the end of the class. All other competitors will receive a letter ranking. Letter Relative Mark Standard A+ 88 or more High Distinction A 85 to 87 Considerable Merit A- 80 to 84 Shows Merit B 75 to 79 Moderately Good C 74 or less Less than Adequate The RMFA will support and be bound by the assessments made by the adjudicators in every circumstance. We ask that you do not approach the adjudicator. Our ANNUAL MEETING will be held at the end of September 2020. Please consult our website for further details. Requests for ADDITIONAL CLASSES for the 2021 Regina Music Festival must be submitted in writing to the Festival Committee before September 30, 2020.
