Her articles have appeared in Signs, SAGE, History Workshop, and Feminist Studies. She was the recipient of the 1989 Lutetia Woods Brown Article Publication Prize and of the University of Kentucky's first Martin Luther King, Jr., Prize for the best scholarly article in African-American history. TANI BARLOW is a historian of modern China teaching in the Women Studies Program at the University of Washington. She has translated (with Gary Bjorge) I Myself Am a Woman: Selected Works of Ding Ling. She is co- editor (with Angela Zito) of Body, Subject, and Power in China; and editor of Gender Politics in Modern China. GISELA BOCK is professor of history at the University of Bielefeld (Germany). She has published books and articles, in a number of languages, on political thought and women's history in early modern Italy, the American labour movement, the history of women's domestic labour, National Socialist racism and sexism, women's place in the rise of the welfare state, and on theory and methodology of gender history. She is the author of the prize-winning book Righteous Discontent: The Women's Movement in the Black Baptist Church, 18801920 (1993). DOLORES JANIEWSKI is a Senior Lecturer in US History at Victoria University in Wellington, New Zealand. Her next monograph is a study of gender, race, citizenship, and criminality in the American South from 1866 to 1932, entitled Passion, Power, and Punishment. Her current research involves a comparative study of race, gender, and colonialism in Samoa, Hawaii, and three Native American societies. MARILYN LAKE was the founding Director of the Program in Women's Studies at La Trobe University, Australia, where she currently holds a Personal Chair in the School of History. Her most recent books include the feminist history of Australia, Creating a Nation (1994) with Patricia Grimshaw, Marian Quartly, and Ann McGrath, and Gender and War (1995) co-edited with Joy Damousi. She is currently writing a history of feminism in Australia, with special interest in feminist conceptions of citizenship. ANNE PHILLIPS is now Professor of Politics at London Guildhall University. Her interest in feminist economics resulted in the publication of Hidden Hands: Women and Economic Policies (1983), but her subsequent work has been in the field of political theory. Her most recent publications are Engendering Democracy (1991), Democracy and Difference (1993), and The Politics of Presence (1995). DENISE RILEY teaches at Goldsmiths' College, London University. Her prose books include War in the Nursery: Theories of the Child and Mother (1983), and 'Am I That Name?' Feminism and the Category of 'Women' in History (1988). She edited Poets on Writing: Britain 19701991. Her most recent collection of poetry is Mop Mop Georgette (1993). LYNDAL ROPER is an Australian who teaches history at Royal Holloway, University of London. She is the author of The Holy Household: Women and Morals in Reformation Germany (1989) and of Oedipus and the Devil: Witchcraft, sexuality and religion in early modern Europe (1994).
