Himatanthus as accepted here comprises nine Neotropical species. The infrageneric and infraspecific taxa proposed by Plumel and Müller, Woodson and Plumel, respectively, are not recognized. Lectotypes are designated for the following names: P. floribunda, P. floribunda var. crassipes, P. lancifolia, P. tarapotensis and P. warmingii. Neotypes are designated for H. rigidus, P. ambigua, P. latifolia and P. lancifolia var. microphylla. An examination of the types of both H. phagedaenicus and H. bracteatus showed that recently these names have been misapplied. Complete synonymies are provided for the nine recognized species of Himatanthus. Also, the new combination H. revolutus (Huber) Spina & Kinoshita is effected. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.12705/626.16 INTRODUCTION NOMENCLATURAL PROBLEMS IN HIMATANTHUS Woodson (1938) recognized Himatanthus Willd. as be- ing restricted to South America and distinct from Plume- “Himatanthus” was first described in an unpublished ria L. based on the following morphological characters: large manuscript by Willdenow based on the single species “Hi- and showy bracts, petaloid or foliaceous, caducous, subtended matanthus rigida Willd.”, described from the specimen by numerous minute, pectinate, adaxial glands at the base; Sieber s.n. collected between 1801 and 1807 in the state of calyx lobes very irregular in size, gradually acuminate and Pará, northern Brazil. These two names were later validly eglandular at the tip, or the calyx inconspicuous; ventral loculi published by Willdenow in Roemer & Schultes (1819), the of the anthers not protuberant; and seeds provided with a “Reliqu. Willd. MS.” statement representing direct associa- broad, more or less concentric, papery wing. Based on these tion of Willdenow with both the names and the diagnosis (Art. differences, Woodson (1938) considered Himatanthus to be 46.3 Ex. 12, McNeill & al., 2012). Formerly, Himatanthus was comprised of six species and two varieties and Plumeria of treated as feminine (Willdenow in Roemer & Schultes 1819; seven species, with four taxa restricted to North and Central Woodson 1938) possibly due to the tendency to treat classi- America. cal tree names as feminine (Art. 62.1, McNeill & al., 2012). Recently Himatanthus was revised by Plumel (1990, 1991) Technically, Himatanthus ought to be neuter as it is based on who proposed two subgenera, “H. subg. Obovatae” (H. subg. the Greek word anthos, but it is treated as masculine in ac- Himatanthus) and H. subg. Lanceolatae Plumel; a new spe- cordance with tradition, under the current Code (Art, 62.2(c), cies, H. stenophyllus Plumel; and eight new combinations: McNeill & al., 2012). H. drasticus (Mart.) Plumel, H. fallax (Müll. Arg.) Plumel, Himatanthus remained monotypic, until Woodson (1938) H. tarapotensis (Schum. ex Markgr.) Plumel, H. speciosus transferred several species of Plumeria to Himatanthus; he (Müll. Arg.) TAXON 62 (6) • December 2013: 1304–1307 Spina & al. • Typifications and nomenclatural novelties in Himatanthus In the protologue of some species of Plumeria Müller- term “holotype” is corrected to “lectotype” (Art. 9.9, McNeill Argoviensis (1860, 1869) and Pilger (1901) did not indicate a & al., 2012). Plumel (1991) treated Plumeria floribunda as a holotype. We designate lectotypes for the following names: synonym of H. lancifolius (Müll. Arg.) Woodson and cited Plumeria floribunda Müll. Arg., Plumeria floribunda var. Saint Hilaire s.n. (Minas Gerais, Casa de Teilha) in P as the crassipes Müll. Arg., Plumeria lancifolia Müll. Arg., Plume- type of P. floribunda. However, the specimen cited by Plumel ria tarapotensis Schum. ex Markgr. and Plumeria warmingii (1991) is not original material for P. floribunda and is to be Müll. Arg. Neotypes are also designated for: Himatanthus taken as a neotype (Art. 9.9, McNeill & al., 2012). For P. flo- rigidus Willd., Plumeria ambigua Müll. Arg. and Plumeria latifolia and Poeppig 2763 (miscited as 2736 by Müller Argoviensis), Pilger, their original holotypes at B having been destroyed the latter chosen here as the lectotype to supersede Plumel’s in World War II. neotype (Art. 9.19, McNeill & al., 2012).
