(excluding Rusts & Smuts) – Jerry Cooper, July 2011 Pg.3 Purpose and Method This list was created to assist the process of identifying collections of unidentified basidiomycetes from the Cook Islands. The list should be considered very much a first draft and does not constitute a robust checklist. It is simply an index of names applied to material published in the readily available literature or applied to specimens mobilised by the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF, Reference 130). As such it provides a starting point for investigating the literature concerning the potential occurrence of a taxon. The area covered by the list includes all the major Pacific Islands/territories in both hemispheres. The list includes 2,771 names occurring in 537 publications covering 72 islands/territories. The total number of index name occurrence records is currently 5,417. The list of island/territory names were harvested from Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pacific_Islands, and the ISO 1366 list. The number of names associated with each island/territory is summarised in Table 1. The list could not have been constructed without the use of existing databases of names and literature references, specifically the IndexFungorum and the NZFUNGI databases, supported a largely automated search and retrieval process. The list of island names was used to search across a digital repository of mycological literature (using a full text index supporting word proximity and synonymy searches). Names of fungi occurring in these references (using IndexFungorum as a name dictionary) were extracted into a database, along with a the corresponding literature reference for the publication. Of 28,000 digital publications only 537 were found to contain name data associated with island names. The research publication repository was not constructed specifically to support this kind of Pacific Island mycological research and so a more targeted search would inevitably increase the relevant indexed data. Using the List Where a name in the list has a different current interpretation according to Species Fungorum, or failing that NZFUNGI, then the preferred name is indicated by = and with the notation SF for SpeciesFungorum or NZ for NZFUNGI. If a name is associated with a a holotype from a specific country then it is indicated by (T). The reference number for the occurrence of each name in each region is given in square brackets following an entry. References to the publications are listed at the end of the document. There are many caveats which apply to this list. Names of uncertain application (?, c.f., aff.) are not flagged as such. The index is not exhaustive. For example many Pacific island specimens were described by C.G. Lloyd in the early part of the 20th century but unfortunately Lloyd made a point of excluding author citations, and the number of homonyms for his names makes it impossible to interpret them readily (although the existing modern indexes to Lloyds material could be employed). Also, G.H. Cunningham in his studies of the polypores made exhaustive studies of material available at Kew and his references sometimes include his interpretation of a name, together with the name on the specmen folder at Kew, the original name applied by the collector, and any notes on subsequent re- determinations noted with the material. The database on which this checklist is based has captured much of this complexity (i.e. synonymy and mis-identifications noted in all references). This multiplicity of linked names has not been captured for the publications of Dingley & McKenzie et al (118, 308-314) because these are secondary indexes in themselves. The information on original stated synonymy and purported misidentifications has not been included in this simplified print-out. Finally, occurrences associated with many of the smaller islands have not been thoroughly searched due to lack of time. A Pacific Island Nomenclator of Basidiomycete Names (excluding Rusts & Smuts) –
