SEKI 3 ABSTRACT: Iridoteuthis iris (Berry, 1909) was originally described from a unique specimen collected in the main Hawaiian Islands, but the holotype is no longer extant. New material was collected from the southern Emperor-northern Hawaiian Ridge seamounts, extending the known range of I. iris by about 3200 km . The new samples are described, including the first description of adults. THE SPECIES COMPOSITION of the cephalopod another individual was collected in Mamala fauna around the Hawaiian Archipelago is Bay off the island ofOahu (ca. 60 km from the well known relative to that of many other type location) in a bottom dredge from the areas. Some species records, however, are vessel Janthina. This specimen was photo from unique specimens and/or juvenile indi- graphed (Figure I) and subsequently lost (B. viduals. Such is the case with the sepiolid Burch, per. comm., Honolulu). Berry (1909) originally named the tion of the adults and extends the known species Stoloteuthis iris, based on similarities range of Iridoteuthis iris by about 3200 km, to S.leucoptera from the Atlantic. Naef(l912) from the Hawaiian Islands to the southern thought the species was different enough from Emperor seamounts. Stoloteuthis to be placed in a new genus, Iridoteuthis, basing his decision largely on the size and shape of the fins, the broad dorsal DISTRIBUTION commissure and nuchal fold, and the large head and eyes. In his monograph of the The material was collected during six Hawaiian cephalopods, however, Berry cruises from March 1978 to June 1986 at four (1914) stood by his original designation, but seamounts in the SE- NHR: Southeast (SE) kept Iridoteuthis as a subgenus.
