Page 1 of 2 Oregon State's No. 1-ranked 1980-81 basketball team will be honored during Saturday's USC game Published: Friday, January 14, 2011, 10:56 AM Updated: Friday, January 14, 2011, 11:38 AM By Paul Buker, The Oregonian From OSU's release: The 1980-81 Oregon State men's basketball team will be honored on Saturday during the Beavers game against USC to highlight the 30-year anniversary of its No. 1 national ranking. The 1980-81 team, coached by the late Ralph Miller, finished the season with a record of 26-2. The Beavers captured the Pacific-10 Oh, boy, does this bring back memories. The Rolando Blackman shot that beat OSU in the NCAA tournament was immortalized on the cover Conference title with a record of 17-1, and of Sports Illustrated won their first 26 games overall. Oregon State was ranked No. 1 in the United Press International Poll from Jan. 13 through March 3, a total of eight weeks, and in the Associated Press Poll for five of those weeks. Highlights from that season included defeating UCLA twice, beating Oregon three times by a combined 54 points, downing St. John's in New York, winning a thrilling overtime game at Washington and capturing the Far West Classic in Portland. Senior center Steve Johnson earned All-American honors for the second consecutive year, after averaging 21.0 points and 7.7 rebounds. The San Bernardino, Calif. product shot .746 from the field for the season, still an NCAA record. Page 2 of 2 Radford was second on the team in scoring (13.0) and third in assists (3.3), while Blume was third in scoring (10.5) and second in assists (3.6). Junior guard Lester Conner, who would earn All-American acclaim the following season, led the team in assists at 4.0 and was considered one of the top defensive players in college basketball.
