MUSÉE D’ART CLASSIQUE DE MOUGINS PRESS PACK www.mouginsmusee.com THE MACM CONCEPT THE MACM The Musée d’Art Classique de Mougins, also known as MACM, is the Mougins Museum of Classical Art. The museum displays within the same space ancient, neoclassical, modern, and contemporary art in order to highlight the considerable influence of the ancient world on the great artists from Sir Peter Paul Rubens to Damien Hirst. Situated on the Côte d’Azur, Mougins is famous for its spectacular views over Cannes and the Alps, its gastronomy, and the beauty of its old village, which from an aerial view resembles a snail. Historic region of the Mediterranean at the edge of ancient Greek civilisation and the heart of the Roman Empire, close to the Graeco-Roman settlements of Nice (Nikaia) and Antibes (Antipolis), Mougins also reconnects with its artistic past through the works on show at the museum which were produced by its former residents Francis Picabia, Jean Cocteau, Man Ray, and of course Pablo Picasso who spent the last 12 years of his life here. Located at the entrance of the picturesque village of Mougins, this private museum holds an exceptional collection of over 800 works over four floors. The MACM focuses on the reciprocal influences of the ancient civilisations of Egypt, Rome, and Greece, and the continuity of the Graeco-Roman legacy through to the present. This narrative also underlines the importance of the interaction of cultures from East to West rather than the chronological development of each civilisation. Remarkable artefacts from ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome interact with drawings, paintings, and sculptures by Paul Cézanne, Marc Chagall, Pablo Picasso, Auguste Renoir, Jean Cocteau, Salvador Dalí, Raoul Dufy, Antony Gormley, Keith Haring, Damien Hirst, Henri Matisse, Henry Moore, Francis Picabia, Marc Quinn, Auguste Rodin, and Henri Toulouse-Lautrec, to name but a few. THE EGYPTIAN BASEMENT gallery is designed as a crypt which houses extraordinary painted coffins, funerary masks and panels, tomb reliefs, statuettes of gods and goddesses. The material represents the span of Egyptology from the Old Kingdom (2686-2181 BC) to the Ptolemaic period (332-30 BC). These artefacts are complemented with works by Sir Peter Paul Rubens, Alexander Calder, Jean THE VISIT Cocteau, Marc Chagall, as well as a wall rubbing of the head of Seti I by Giovanni Battista Belzoni, one of the greatest figures in Egyptian archeology. THE GROUND FLOOR features the People and Personalities gallery created to satisfy the public’s perpetual interest in the great historical personalities of Ancient Greece and Rome. A series of exquisite marble heads, busts, and statues take the visitor on a tour of the mighty Roman emperors and personalities including Augustus, Tiberius, Claudius, Nero, Hadrian, Marcus Aurelius and the father of modern philosophy, Socrates. Interspersed with these works are a number of sculptures, drawings, and paintings by artists including Alessandro Turchi, Giovanni Panini, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Henry Moore, Francis Picabia, Egon Schiele, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Damien Hirst, Antony Gormley, and Marc Quinn. THE FIRST FLOOR continues the dynamic of ancient and modern art with the Gods and Goddesses and Social Customs gallery. Here the emphasis shifts from historical personalities to ancient beliefs, mythology and various aspects of everyday life. Greek gods and their Roman counterparts are displayed in the form of fine bronze statuettes, marble heads, busts, and statues. The modern interest in banqueting is addressed with Greek and Roman silver bowls and drinking vessels, glassware, ceramic vases, and candelabra. The Roman banquet and opulence of high living would not be complete without the large floor mosaics displayed on the wall and the showcases dedicated to ancient coins and jewellery . Alongside these works one can admire classically-inspired artworks by artists including Auguste Renoir, Georges Braque, Marc Chagall, Salvador Dali, Yves Klein, Amedeo Modigliani, Andrée Masson, Edgar Degas, Auguste Rodin, Keith Haring, and Pablo Picasso. THE ARMOURY, on the second floor, contains the world’s largest private collection of Graeco- Roman arms and armour. It boasts an impressive variety of body armour, Chalcidian, Corinthian, Illyrian, Pilos, and Phrygian helmets. Soldiers lived, fought and died in this equipment, and much of it bears the scars of battle from some of the greatest military campaigns in history. Military- themed artworks by Man Ray, Elisabeth Frink, Giorgio De Chirico and Salvado Dalí beautifully complement this exhibit. The founder of the museum is Christian Levett, a British investment manager with a passion for history and art. A fanatical, but highly ethical collector since childhood, he in 2009 decided to form a museum to place his antiquity and classical art collection on public display, and the Mougins Museum opened to the public in June 2011. Since then the museum has gone from strength to strength, winning international awards and loaning dozens of objects to other museum and university exhibitions all over the world. THE FOUNDER Christian himself is a keen philanthropist in the field, sponsoring multiple exhibitions at The British Museum, Royal Academy, National Gallery, Sir John Soane’s Museum and the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. He has funded archaeological works in the UK, Italy and Egypt and owns the archaeology and ancient art magazine, Minerva Magazine. He has sponsored academic scholarships at Wolfson College and The Ruskin School of Art in Oxford and has aided curatorial funding at The Ashmolean, The British Museum and The British School at Rome. He has funded renovation works at The Charterhouse Museum London, Charterhouse School Surrey, The National Gallery and Musée L’Eglise de Notre Dame de Vie Mougins, and has sponsored conferences at King’s College London, Senate House UCL and at The Mougins Museum. He is a member of the Arms and Armour Committee at The Metropolitan Museum of New York and member of The Visitors Board of The Ashmolean Museum Oxford and is a past board member of The Hadrian’s Wall Trust. Christian is also an Honorary Fellow of The Ashmolean Museum, an honorary fellow of Wolfson College Oxford and a member of the Oxford University Chancellors Court of Benefactors. The MACM counts many public and academic accolades: • Winner of the Apollo’s Museum Opening of the Year award in 2011 • Winner of the cultural award Ken d’Or 2012, • The only French museum nominated for the European Museum of the Year award 2013 • Nominated in the Virtual Reality/Augmented Reality category at the Patrimoine & Innovation(s) 2017 awards, CLIC France for MACM 4D, the virtual and interactive visit of the museum The MACM has also been awarded the TripAdvisor’s AWARDS AND ACCOLADES AWARDS Certificates of Excellence year on year since opening and the government-approved brand ‘Quality Tourism’ in 2016. In its 8th year of existence, the MACM is an accessible and well-established museum that offers its visitors not only the possibility to enjoy a harmoniously displayed academically acclaimed collection in a museum of a human scale, it is also recognised for the quality of its events aimed at a public as eclectic as its collection. With objects on loan to national and international museums, a diverse programme of cultural and convivial events, bespoke visits for school children and youth centres, the MACM continues to strive to inspire all its visitors and to share Christian Levett’s collection and the pleasure of learning with the widest possible audience.
