A compelling look at the lives of undocumented immigrants trying to make their way across the border into the U.S. At times melodramatic, but achieves its purpose of humanizing the headlines. Thought-provoking and timely. The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead Winner of the 2020 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. A series of mishaps lands Elwood Curtis, a bright African American hoping to go to college and be an activist like his role model, Martin Luther King Jr., to the Nickel School, an abusive reform school in Jim Crow-era Florida. A tragic, redemptive, powerful book. Let Me Lie by Clare Mackintosh Twists abound in this tense thriller about a young woman whose parents commit suicide within one year of each other—or do they? Fast-paced, suspenseful. Youth Fiction Ruby Redfort: Look Into My Eyes by Lauren Child A mystery set in the ‘70s involving a smart, sassy tween with dim, stylish parents; her bff ambassador’s son; and a secret agency whose mission is to thwart mad, evil baddies, a la Get Smart. For those who crave a little more action than Nancy Drew can provide. Audiobook *Less by Andrew Sean Greer Winner of the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. A writer who enjoys mid-level success wrestles with failure and middle age as he travels the world to avoid his former lover’s wedding. Arthur Less is somehow both knowing and naïve, comic and tragic, adult and childlike, but completely memorable. Wry, satirical and enchanting. LGBTQ+ .
