Oregon Employment Department, Research Division Persistent population loss is a challenge for many rural communities where young people leave to continue their education, find a better paying job, or Simply to gain life experiences in larger urban center. 2014, Oregon State Economist Mark McMullen observed that young people leaving the rural areas because employment options are limited. This coupled with companies failing to be established in the rural areas due to a lack of workers locally is creating a destructive “negative, perpetuating cycle.” Panelists will discuss the recent economic forecast for coastal and rural regions and the unique challenges associated with maintaining an educated and healthy workforce in these areas.
