The advancement of the Cassowary Coast region to a vibrant and economically diverse centre is close to John’s heart. Having a thriving economy is essential to ensuring employment for the youth and preventing the leaking of future entrepreneurs and leaders from the region. John was born and raised in Innisfail and attended Innisfail Central State School and Innisfail State High School. He joined the National Bank of Australasia Ltd (now NAB) and worked in Innisfail, Gordonvale, Mareeba, Tully and Surfers Paradise, and in the Brisbane suburbs of Alderley, Cleveland and Sunnybank Hills. After undertaking internal studies with NAB, John was appointed as branch manager at Eagle Farm and then at Tin Can Bay. After 21 years with NAB, he commenced operating his own business, Tin Can Bay Mitre 10 Hardware, and then met his wife Barbara. John and Barbara significantly transformed their business and were awarded the 1998 True Value Member of the Year Award. They were subsequently awarded the 2007 Best Queensland Retail Store Up To 700m2 by the Hardware Association of Queensland. The couple returned to Innisfail in 2008 to be closer to family. They purchased Larsen's Newsagency, which they expanded and continued to run. John subsequently managed Innisfail Hardware over a five-year-period and oversaw its transition to the modern business it is today. John has always been community minded and is proud of his contributions and achievements, including: ▪ Foundation Member, Leo’s Club Gordonvale ▪ Member, Lions Club Tin Can Bay - 15 years holding all executive positions ▪ Member, Lions Club Innisfail ▪ Committee Member, Innisfail Brothers Rugby League Football Club - President for three years and Vice- President for one year ▪ Board Member, Brothers Leagues Club for three years ▪ Member, Innisfail Chamber of Commerce ▪ Member, Cassowary Coast Economic Development Inc.
