The issue contains time series data on the various aspects of the economy of the state. Further district level information for the latest year is also presented where ever possible. Considering the importance of database in creating awareness about not only the past and present but also its utility in analytical works for future assessment, the role of the Directorate in the documentation of the data in bringing out this issue is indeed to be appreciated. Data users in general will greatly benefit from the data presented in the publication. The materialization of this issue would not have been possible without the positive cooperation of different Central and State Government Organizations/institutions. I hope all the organizations will collectively continue to work towards bringing out reliable data covering issues of current interest. I congratulate the officers and staff of the Directorate who are directly or indirectly associated in bringing out the current issue and also hope that the Directorate will continue in extending helping hand to the needs of the data users. ( N. MANGI SINGH ) 3 Manipur Secretariat Room No. 186, South Block M.A. SATTAR, IAS Imphal-795 001 Commissioner, Department of Economics & Statistics ( + 91-385-2450350(Office) Government of Manipur FOREWORD The ‘Statistical Abstract, Manipur, 2005’ presents primary as well as secondary statistical information which is either officially furnished by Government Deptts./Organisations/Institutions or built up from surveys. It provides information on various subjects of importance like population, price indices, social and economic infrastructure etc., which are of great significance in understanding the development efforts made by the Government/Local Bodies/Organisations/individuals etc. Therefore, the current issue which is the sixth in the series will be definitely useful to students, researchers, planners, policy makers and the people in general. The valuable contributions of the various agencies in supplying data from time to time to the Directorate of Economics and Statistics, Manipur, are very much significant. Without their active cooperation, it would not have been possible for the Directorate, acting as the nodal agency for coordinating all statistical activities in the State to carry out its tasks of documenting and disseminating statistical information. I hope the work of catering to the needs of data users will continue with dedication in future too. The present issue is a product of the hard work put in by the officers/officials beginning from the collection and compilation of the data to the printing and binding of the publication, which is very much appreciable. I express my congratulations to all those responsible for bringing out the publication. M.A. SATTAR 4 PREFACE The current issue of the “Statistical Abstract Manipur, 2005” is the sixth in the series. According to the recommendation of the Fifth Conference of Central and State Statistical Organisations (COCSSO), the publication is supposed to be an annual publication but it has not been possible to do so. Attempts are made to review the subject coverage of the Statistical Abstract by following the recommendations of the Working Group. The current issue incorporates the latest available data under different heads of economic and social development. It gives state aggregates at convenient intervals in order to enable to grasp a comprehensive picture of the trends of socio-economic development of Manipur in terms of quantitative measures. The latest data are presented at the disaggregate levels as far as practicable. The statistical abstract is a reasonably comprehensive source document for authentic data on various sectors of the state economy especially targeted to users having no access to statistical returns/publications of various individual source agencies. The concepts and definitions followed in the abstract are those recommended by the working group to afford comparability across the States/UT’s. The statistics presented in different tables of this publication are those furnished by different Govt./Semi-Govt. Departments/Organisation/Institutions. The continued and generous co-operation extended to this Directorate by various offices of the Central Govt., State Govt. and public undertakings, in making available the requisite data for the abstract is gratefully acknowledged. Without their supports, the Directorate would not be able to bring out the publication in time. The publication has been prepared by the coordination and publication (COP) Unit of the Directorate. The sincerity and hard work put in by all the employees involved in the preparation of this issue are gratefully acknowledged. This acknowledgement cannot be concluded without appreciation to all the Govt./Semi-Govt. Organisations/Institutions for extending their valuable cooperation in making available authoritative data. It is hope that this publication will be of great help to the data users. There is of course rooms for further improvements in the quality, coverage, timeliness and even in the mode of presentation. Suggestions towards this end are most welcome.
