On 1st April 2003, Health Authorities in Wales were abolished and 22 Local Health Boards (LHBs) were established. As a Local Health Board, we are responsible for planning what health services our population needs and then commissioning local hospitals, family doctors (GPs), Dentists, Pharmacists, Opticians and others to provide services. The LHB covers exactly the same area as Flintshire County Council (the Local Authority) and this allows much closer working between the NHS and the council, which is important for planning programmes for health and well-being. The LHB and Council have a statutory duty to work together, in partnership with other local organisations such as Social Services, the Community Health Council and voluntary services, to produce strategies for improving health, well-being and social care for the people of Flintshire. The LHB will also work closely with you to discuss and listen to your views about changes to local health services. Your guide to local health services This booklet has been produced by Flintshire Local Health Board as a guide to local health services in the Flintshire area. It provides you with information on how to access local health services such as GPs, Dentists, Pharmacists and Opticians, as well as contact details for the local hospitals in the area. 2 It also provides you with information on how you can share your views and help to influence change locally. Your local hospital will also produce a guide which will give information about outpatient and inpatient services, hospital facilities, telephone numbers and discharge arrangements. NHS Direct Wales 0845 4647 NHS Direct Wales is a telephone service, provided by nurses, giving confidential healthcare advice and information 24 hours a day. Nurses and Health Information Advisers can advise on what to do if you are ill, you have health concerns about someone close to you, or you need information about local health services. As well as providing confidential health advice, NHS Direct Wales can also provide information on: • late night dental services • self - help & support groups • organ, blood and tissue donations If you have access to the internet, you can find their website at: www.nhsdirect.wales.nhs.uk Accident and Emergencies (A&E) A&E departments are for people who have had an accident or a sudden illness (something which has got much worse in the last 24 hours). There is an A&E department at the Wrexham Maelor Hospital (01978 291100), Glan Clwyd Hospital (01745 583910) and the Countess of Chester Hospital (01244 365000). 3 Minor Injury departments are also available at Flint community Hospital (open from 8am to 8pm, 7 days per week), Holywell Community Hospital (open 24 hours a day, 7 days per week) and Mold Community Hospital (open 24 hours a day, 7 days per week). The telephone numbers for these hospitals can be found under the ‘useful telephone numbers’ section of this booklet. In the event of a serious injury, accident or medical emergency, you should call 999 without delay. Do remember though that the Ambulance Service should be used appropriately and unnecessary calls place an extra burden on ambulance crews. How do I register with a GP? Contact the Doctor of your choice (a full list of Doctors in the Flintshire area can be found further on in this booklet) If this Doctor is unable to register you, try other Doctors in your area If you are finding it difficult to register with a Doctor in your area, then write to the following address and request that your name be allocated to the list of a local Doctor: Patient Data Department Business Services Centre Preswylfa Hendy Road Mold CH7 1PZ 4 Ask your Pharmacist From sprains to stomach upsets, Pharmacists are qualified to give you expert advice without an appointment. As most people know, antibiotics don’t work on colds and other viral infections. However, you can get plenty of advice from your Pharmacist about ‘over the counter’ medicines that can help to relieve your symptoms. A full list of Pharmacies in the Flintshire area can be found further on in this booklet. How can I access a GP outside normal surgery hours? If you require a Doctor outside normal surgery hours, you should telephone your practice and an answer phone message will direct you to the out of hours service provided. Where can I get my prescription dispensed outside normal opening hours? Most Pharmacies are open for all or part of Saturdays and operate a rota system for Sundays, Bank Holidays and evenings. Your local Pharmacy will have a notice in their window directing you to those Pharmacies available during these periods, alternatively, contact NHS Direct Wales information. Local newspapers will also have details of those Pharmacies who are open. 5 How can I register with a Dentist for NHS treatment? For details of Dentists currently accepting new NHS patients in your area, contact the Dental Helpline on 07000 780377 or NHS Direct Wales on 0845 46 47. Alternatively, contact the LHB on 01352 700227 for information and advice. How do I access emergency dental services? If you are a registered NHS patient, ring your own Dentist. If not, telephone NHS Direct for information and advice. How can I get an eye test? It is easy to have an eye test done. You do not need to register, you can simply ask any Optician for an appointment. A full list of Opticians in the Flintshire area can be found further on in this booklet. Primary care services The following section provides the names, addresses and telephone numbers of Doctors, Dentists, Pharmacies and Opticians in the Flintshire area, by town. If you need any further information, such as opening times, please contact the practices direct.
