INTRODUCTION These records contain all the historical data provided by research undertaken by Lawrie Wright and Brian Box and from an early history of Hertford Cricket Club written by Aubrey Baker in 1940. The main source of information has been the local paper and data for earlier years is therefore not complete. An old score book of the late 1880's has provided a detailed cameo of that era and fortunately includes the batting details of the high scoring game against Cheshunt. Other books exist for the late 1930’s and some for the 1940’s. Current records are compiled from statistics produced by David Williams at the end of each season and the scorebooks available back to around 1960. Modern times Team performances are given separately. "Other games" are not included. These "other games" are currently midweek games, tours and cricket week fixtures. When a Bank Holiday Monday fell within a cricket week, the Monday games are included with the appropriate eleven (usually the first). Cup records are listed separately for each competition and from 2000 are also included as 1st XI games – from that date cup matches moved to Sundays. Pre- war, cricket weeks were listed as 1st XI games and have been included as such. For individual performances, separate records are produced for each eleven and an "All Eleven" set which combines the performances of individual players across the separate elevens (including other games). Cup records were all included in "other games" up to and including 1999. From 2000 the major cup competitions, 45 and 50 over matches, are included in first eleven statistics. As mentioned above, the matches are now played on Sundays. Also, cricket week games etc. were included in 1st XI averages in the nineteen fifties and have been left there, though the results are listed separately. A player may have an entry in the All Elevens section but fail to get a corresponding entry under a particular eleven. This will occur if the performances in the separate elevens did not merit an inclusion, due to insufficient games say, whereas the total performance did. The other games, midweek & tour matches etc. are included in the players overall statistics at the end. The advent of scorecards on the website has enabled differentiation between catches taken in the field and behind the stumps. This differentiation has been applied from season 2003 onwards. Prior to that year, wicketkeepers were credited with catches when they took a spell in the outfield and the occasional keeper’s catches were counted with his fielding ones. Under team and individual records where more than one column appears, the first covers all data available, the others cover limited time periods such as the last 5 years. The choice of period will depend on the usefulness of information provided. Where a score may logically count twice, for example a hundred may count as a fifty and a total of 800 runs count as over 500 and over 750, then this has been done. Thus an entry of 5 fifties in a year may in fact be 4 fifties and a century. Doing it this way is, I feel, more informative. The winning and losing margins by wickets are ranked in order of r/w where r is the target score and w is the number of wickets lost. If no wickets were lost then 1.5r is used for ranking. Thus a nine wicket win chasing 160 is better than a ten wicket win chasing 100 but less than a ten wicket win chasing 110.
