THE HERALDRY OF THE TRIE FAMILY Steen Clemmensen, 2008 www.armorial.dk Members of the northern french family of Trie (dep Oise, arr Beauvais, can Chaumont-en-Vexin, cne Trié-Château), a cadet of the maison Beaumont-sur-Oise, has been cited 66 times in a number of medieval armorials, but which member is actually involved is often difficult to ascertain as the christian names Renaud, Jean and Mathieu and the additional names Billebaut and Patrouillart are endemic in the family. Heraldically speaking the coats-of.arms used are simple variations of the family arms: Or a bend azure. They use labels and minor charges to indicate cadency and also differentiation of the bend. The most significant differentiation is caused by the inheritance of the comté de Dammartin-en-Goële (dep Oise, arr. Meaux / Nanteuil-le-Haudoin) in 1259 by Mathieu S.Trie & Mouchy & Plessis-Billebaut (d.1272). Mathieu sealed with the arms of Dammartin: Barry argent and azure within a border gules. The arms with the bend compony fimbriated or simply compony was known early as bande de Dammartin, but not necessarily used by the comital branch only. In the following the coats-of-arms are coded as in Clemmensen OM, and for the sigla and abbreviations used see the lists and bibliography on www.armorial.dk. The pedigree used is taken from ESNF 3.4:645-648. An older pedigree is in Anselme 8:442 + 607 and 6:661-686. A different partial pedigree was proposed in Brault RAE 2:421-422 for the items in some english armorials (see the appended plate). The branch names used here are chosen for their convenience only. They can be misleading as some lordships were held in part and some titles changed, e.g. S.Trie and S.Mouchy held in the ‘Plessis line’ until Renaud (d.1324), who changed his title to S.Plessis-Billebaut & Mareuil, and the Mouchy title then being used by the distant cousins Jean (d.c.1368) and Mathieu (d.1360). The title was then recovered by Renaud dit Patrouillart (fl.1391) as he inherited the lordship. Assignment of arms to individuals or branches must often be tentative due to lack of evidence. Seals on fiscal or property documents are very valuable, but rarely available. Genealogical tables are of more limited value, as the user is often without knowledge of their documentation. Here we have an otherwise unknown, but documented Henri (WIN:5) outside the ESNF. Given such limitations, the reporting of the Trie family use of arms appears consistent and with few changes made by any individual. Thibaut S.Serifontaine (fl.1267-1302) might have changed from using the primary arms with a label to charging the bend with annulets or escallops. The family split into main branches only twice, firstly by Renaud S.Fontenay & Vaumain, brother of Mathieu C.Dammartin (d.1272), and secondly by the sons of Mathieu into the comital, Plessis- Billebaut and Serifontaine lines. By 1487 it became extinct in the male line. - - - Dieter Schwennicke, Freytag-Loringhoven FB, Isenburg WK: Europaische Stammtafeln, Neue Folge , I-XIX(+); Stammtafeln zur Geschichte Europäischer Staaten.
