Glenelg Breakers www.glenelgbreakers.vze.com This past year has seen the continued evolution of the Club. Your committee has maintained the determination to keep the Club running smoothly and ensuring that the members expec- tations are met, if not exceeded. Kym Lau and Carol Packard continue to open and run both the Monday night and Sunday afternoon sessions and are to be commended on their dedication to our Club. If anyone can help them with either or both of the sessions, please speak to Kym, Carol or myself. All three club championships were well attended with some excellent games played. Thank you to Carol, Simon Oaten, John, Jeff, Jane and Sandy for running the events, and to Eli Awwad for his bbq skills. Junior training has been well attended and ably managed by Nigel, Jeff, Simon Packard, Jane and Alex. Our young people seem to enjoy it immensely as they did the club championships. Thank you to our team managers John Ly, Steve Todd, and Nick Seal. This year will see the end of Jeff Green’s association with bad- minton and in particular the Glenelg Badminton Club. He is retiring to pursue his other great love, golf. He was honoured by being awarded Life Membership of Badminton SA at the SABA AGM held in October. He will be sorely missed and hard to replace. Simon White, the first junior member of the Club, received Life Membership of the Glenelg Badminton Club at the Glenelg AGM held in October. You do not need me to tell you that you belong to a good, strong club. There are a number of components that conspire towards making a good club, one is an energetic and competent committee. Another vital ingredient is agreeable and coopera- tive members and there can be no doubt that is the case. All in all it’s a pretty good package and long may it continue. Robert 1 Jeff Green receiving his Life Membership badge from President of Badminton SA Simon White, on Saturday 27th October, 2012. Sandy Faithfull joined the Club some 25 years or more ago. She started playing socially, then ventured into competition in a C grade team with Bobbie Salotti, Jeff Green, Marilyn Bowey and Trudy Green and ventured up to B grade for one season. Possibly Sandy would have viewed the inclusion of Bennett Sandhu in the team, as a small problem, Bennett being the troublesome teen that he was. Sandy’s contribution to the club over these years, has been significant and very much appreciated. We all wish her much enjoyment in her life ahead and hopefully she can avoid the rough and bunkers. Sandy remembers……. Going to a Come and Try session at the Glenelg YMCA with a friend and although not being able to hardly hold a racquet, they found many nice people to show them the ropes. David Currie, Michelle Currie (Whitehead) was 12 or 13 years old then. Trudy Green’s dad, Brian Emery (life Member) and Edna Bannister (Life Member) and Rose MacDonald were there as well. She remembers tea and bickies around the kitchen, quiz nights, social nights, golf days (Dodgy scoring system) and bbq’s at Bonython Park. The atmosphere was very social back then. After the move to Lockleys, there were some fun nights at Carol Packard’s home pre- paring the prizes for quiz nights. Sandy has always enjoyed her association with badminton, enjoyed playing, enjoyed the Committee work and has made some good friends. She is not stepping away as a club member but is pursuing her golf ( I think it is catching eh Jeff!!!) 9 JEFF GREEN FAREWELL Way back in 1988 one of the club’s long time members Trudy Green nee Emery brought along her recently acquired husband Jeff Green to introduce him to bad- minton. After being shown which end of the racquet to hold by Peter Vanderlans he soon got the hang of it. That was the beginning of a long association with badminton Along the way he joined the club committee and took on the role of team’s co-coordinator and Vice President. As time went on he be- came involved in many club activities and functions. It is hard to say which facet is the most memorable. Some elements are that infamous liaison with Adam Russell which gave birth to the Dodgy Brothers a name that really exemplified that association. Anything goes was the motto of the duo sheep manure, used fluro tubes and I am sure Bobbie Salotti is still trying to work out the maths of their betting board at a day at the races and that is to say nothing about the golf days and got ya! You may need to ask Jeff for an explanation of that one. There have been many things over the years I could speak about but I am trying to keep it brief. In about 1996 Jeff started umpiring and perhaps it was as much about the realization that his badminton talents were not going to take him to state or national let alone international selection. Jeff has managed to achieve many significant things in his umpiring career including line judging at the Sydney Olympics, umpiring at the Melbourne Commonwealth games, national senior and junior tournaments and at he Macau Open to name a few. In 1995 Jeff and I restarted the Glenelg junior program and I don’t think I am stealing Jeff’s words when I say I think this is one Jeff’s best achievements probably the most satisfying. We have seen many young people come through the program to achieve their goals. I am of no doubt Jeff has achieved many of his goals through and in badminton and his commitment should not be understated. Thank you for your time and dedication watch out for those bunkers even though I am sure your past experience with them will serve you well. 10 SIMON WHITE—GLENELG LIFE MEMBERSHIP Back in 1995 Jeff and I reinvigorated the Glenelg junior program this coincided with a visit to Sacred Heart College from the then Association SDO and now Glenelg life member David Nash to run an introduction to badminton clinic. The following Sunday one attendee at that clinic pedalled his bike from Glenelg North to Glengowrie to be the first and only participant in our inaugural junior training ses- sion. He became a regular attendee and soon looked for further opportunities to improve his skills.
