With the exception of Turkey, no member of the international community has recognised this republic. On 1 May 2004 the Republic of Cyprus - the mainly Greek southern part of the island - entered the European Union while the Community acquis remains suspended in the northern part of the island. Some of the sources in this Information Guide refer to the island of Cyprus as a whole, some to the southern part of the island, the [Greek] Republic of Cyprus. Sources which specifically refer to the northern [Turkish] part of Cyprus are listed separately under the sub-heading Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).
