The annual 5K Race helps raise desperately needed funds for the continuance of athletic programs in the East Side Union High School District. McKenna Duzak, a junior at Oak Grove High School, not only won a fourth place at Intel International Science and Engineering Fair but also a 4 year renewable scholarship to Florida Institute of Technology ($15K/yr). McKenna's project on quantum dot solar cells was done entirely at school! Kudos to McKenna and her instructor, John Allen! Kudos The Piedmont Hills Vocal Jazz Ensemble earned a Command Performance Rating (the highest rating) at the Santa Cruz Jazz Festival on Friday, May 4, 2012. As a result they were asked to perform at the festival closing concert on Saturday which featured all of the top rated groups. We are tremendously proud of their accomplishments! Compared to a year ago the district’s enrollment has decreased by 1.5% or 305 students. The historical chart below is from the CDE. The chart includes charter school enrollment numbers on CBEDS date for a total of 25,638 students. The historic decline is part of the overall drop in students for East Side and its feeder districts. The CBEDS enrollment of Charter Students for 2011-12 was approximately 1,654 students. The opening of the two Summit Public Charter Schools plus the last grade added to KIPP: Collegiate accounted for 300 new charter school students for 2011-12. Maintenance / Facilities Oak Grove High School – repairs have been completed to the solar panels damaged by a delivery truck. Mt. Pleasant High School – Phase II of the modernization, Building 600 will be completed by July 30, and Building 700 will be ready for occupancy by mid-September. Phase III, work on the Gym will start Friday, May 25. Modernization on Buildings 200 & 300 will start in early June. Facilities Mt. Pleasant Multi-Purpose Building Nears Completion Workers are busy completing the site work around Mt. Pleasant new multi-purpose building. This facility is on schedule to be completed by the end of June. The final stages of work include: pouring the walkways and installing the landscaping around the building and integrating Trespa wall panels onto the exterior of the building to protect it. The Trespa panels are extremely weather resistant and require minimal work to keep the facility looking good for many years. Most of the interior work is completed. Furniture should be in place by mid June. The building is located behind the theater and is visible from Marten Avenue. It will house six general education classrooms and has ample meeting space to accommodate school assemblies, testing, staff and community meetings. A grand opening celebration is being planned for August to showcase the facility to the staff, students and community. We have an opportunity to share again, one of the highest evaluated workshops ever offered in East Side. Gradual Release of Responsibility (GRR) is a powerfully innovative pedagogy. The workshop will be taught by Dr. Laurie Stapleton of Stanford University and our own professional development team! The workshop will follow a practicum approach of theory in the morning followed by practice (in the summer school classroom) in the late morning and afternoon. ESUHSD will host the ERWC workshop series beginning with the first two workshops this summer. The first two workshops are being offered during the summer because a number of teachers stated that they would rather not miss three instructional days. Their voices were heard.
