CARE Jurassic Coast Trek Route information Please note this route is subject to change and the final route will be communicated to all walkers well in advance. Starting on the sandy beach of the beautiful town of Swanage the route will soon see you gaining height as you follow the South West Coast path giving you a fantastic panaroma over the town as you catch your breath. As you continue round the coast very soon one of the most famous coastal features that Dorset has to offer will come into sight. Old Harry Rocks is a series of huge chalk stacks jutting out into the sea and as you descend towards them along the path, you will be greeted with another memorable view. The route will then lead you past the town of Studland before climbing up onto the magnificent chalk ridge where you will be able to enjoy some Poole harbour and Bournemouth to the north with Swanage and the coast to the south. Following the path as it leads you along the top of the ridge you will suddenly come over a hill to see the thousand-year-old ruins of Corfe Castle. This iconic royal castle has literally ‘been through the wars’ and as you descend into the town of Corfe you will get a variety of views from different angles as you pass round the battlements following the route. Climbing back up onto ridge you will continue west away from the castle towards the Grange Hill which will be the point on the route where you will turn south towards the coast and re-join the South West Coast path. Making your way south you will pass alongside Lulworth Firing range before reaching the coast path and then turning east you will soon reach the Purbeck Marine wildlife centre which marks the halfway point. As you leave the half-way point, the route will see you climb up a ‘thigh burning’ set of stairs that takes you back up on to the cliff and past Kimmerage Bay Tower with commanding views over the surrounding coastline. The path skirts around the coastline taking you past the spectacular Kimmerage ledges towards Chapman’s pool where you descend down another flight of steep stairs just to the west of the town of Worth Matravers. Continuing round the coast you will next pass St Aldhelm’s Chapel a grade 1 listed Norman building after you have tackled some challenging stairs that see you loose and then gain over 120m in height as you travel 300m. Moving along the undulating path you will pass Seacombe Quarry and Dancing ledge before reaching Anvil point lighthouse. From this point it starts to feel like you are in the closing stages of the event as the path improves significantly and the going starts to get easier. Soon after passing the lighthouse you will come to Durlston Castle before descending down back into Swanage and on to the path that will lead you round the bay and along the promenade to the finish line on the beach.
