My coming visit was organized by the Direction of Partnerships IRIS (Inno- vation Relations International Strategy) in University Montpellier 2 being patron- ized by Francois HENN, Vice-President for International Relations and Irina Koz- hina, coordinator of project SCEE «Founding the Siberian Center of European Education». The main goal of my visit in University Montpellier 2 was to establish close relations between the UM2 and the PNU and to lay a basis for future collaboration in research and education spheres, especially between Montpellier School of Man- agement (IAE) and Pacific National University Faculty of Economics and Man- agement. That should lead eventually to creating joint educational programs and initiating other mutual educational activities. The preliminary set of tasks to fulfill during my visit was the following: • to see and learn how the teaching process is organized and which teaching methods are employed with active participation at the lectures, exercise sessions, discussions with the UM2 professors; • to acquire samples of the corresponding materials presently used at the UM2 (teaching aids, exercises series, etc.) for further discussion with the col- leagues and dissemination at the PNU; • to learn the experience in research projects and experience of cooperation with business partners; • to encourage best practice exchange in education and research sphere; • to come to an agreement with the UM2 professors involved on the general fields of study and more specific subjects which will be developed in the frame- 3 work of the SCEE project and eventually serve as a basis for organizing joint edu- cational bodies (double diploma programs); • to get closely acquainted with the UM2 curricula in place for the chosen study of directions, compare with the curricula for similar subjects used in the PNU; • to see the ways for adaptation and working out common curricula which might be used in the future joint faculties, between Montpellier School of Man- agement (IAE) and Pacific National University Faculty of Economics and Man- agement; • to get familiar with the requirements for admission to the UM2 for foreign students; • to establish active cooperation between the UM2 and PNU covering sev- eral initiatives, such as organizing joint educational programs double diploma pro- grams, mobility staff, research works, exchanging students and so on; • to describe the cultural atmosphere of France and Montpellier in order to clarify what foreign students and professors might expect, coming to south France. Therefore, the report covers the following areas: 1. to describe University Montpellier 2 (history establishing, its education programs, scientific fields, research areas, international collaboration, prospects of development and possibility of the international relations with PNU); 2. to detail all the progress made during the training and study visit, includ- ing discovering in UM2 with the emphasis on meetings & events participated, the persons stayed in touched with, the subjects and the discussions taken part; 3. to establish active co-operation between the UM2 & the PNU covering several initiatives, such as organizing joint educational bodies (double diploma programs & faculties), joint educational programs and so on. The report includes introduction, three chapters and bibliography, including 61 pages, 43 images, 7 tables and 2 appendices. 1. The University Montpellier 2 Sciences and Techniques 4 Image 1. The University Montpellier 2 (main building). University Montpellier 2 is one of the oldest European universities. The University of Sciences of Montpellier was created in the Middle Ages in 1150. When the first Faculty of Medicine was founded, University has maintained a strong tradition in education and research. In the 12th century, it hosted a Faculty of Medicine and the Faculties of Law and Arts. Medicine, Law and Theology, at that time, taught together as one discipline until progress in scientific knowledge led to the definition of specific scientific fields. A first chair in Chemistry was cre- ated as early as 1676. In 1808, Napoleon the 1st founded the Science Faculty of Montpellier, which composed seven chairs: Mathematics, Astronomy, Physics, Chemistry, Zoology, Botany and Mineralogy. In 1879, the faculty created a re- search station of Marine Biology in Sète, and, twelve years later, and Institute of Botany (which is still part of University Montpellier 2). The Institute of Chemis- try, created in the same period, became the Ecole Nationale Supérieure of Chemis- try of Montpellier in 1941. In 1964, the faculty left the Centre of Montpellier to settle in a 30 hectare campus to the north of the city on which 146 000 m 2 of build- ings for teaching and research were built. The University Montpellier 2 Sciences and Techniques in Languedoc were founded in 1970 on the occasion of the framework law on Higher Education de- 5 scends directly the 19 century science faculty, through its solidly established fun- damental disciplines and their resulting legacy. The University Montpellier 2 has successfully managed to valorize its his- tory and to project itself into the future by developing high quality innovative sci- entific research in fundamental and technological disciplinary fields. Now the University Montpellier 2 is a multi-discipline university whose teaching and research Centre on the sciences and technological research. In the future Universities Montpellier 1 and 2 will merge, creating the Uni- versity of Montpellier South Of France. Image 2. The University Montpellier South of France (2014). 1.1 Overview Todays the university welcomes over 16000 students who register in bache- lor and master degree programs. UM2 employs over 1800 staff members, of whom 1000 are teachers and researchers. 581 researchers had worked in the University Montpellier 2, funded by large research organizations. Research faculties consist of large multi-disciplinary research centers, which are in constant movement and which are organized into 10 departments. The 10 research departments are: 6 - Agri-resources and Biological Processes - Biology – Evolution – the Environment - Biology – Health - Chemistry - Electronics, Electro-technology, Automation, Information Technology - Mathematical Science - Mechanical and Civil Engineering - Physics: the structure of matter - Earth, water and space sciences of Montpellier - Management sciences The scientific production of these departments is considerable with 3000 publications, 1500 communications and 40 patents per year. In The University Montpellier 2 Sciences and Techniques we can see following: 10 Bachelors of Sci- ence specialties, 16 University Diplomas of Technology, 40 Professional Bachelors specialties, 12 Master references, 60 specialties. 5 doctoral schools offer special- ized scientific and technological courses to over 300 post-graduate students per year. University campus consists of 262 692 m 2 buildings. Image 3. University campus. An annual budget of UM2 is 52 million evro. 7 UM2 is involved in 33 selected National projects in the field of Mathemat- ics, Computer Science, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Environment, Social and Human Science. Thus, I have found out that now UM2 in national and international ranking represents as a «Research» university. It is 4th place after Université Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris XI and Strasbourg in France by rating France Times Higher Education. By rankings Times Higher Education (institution) UM2 has 290th place in worldwide. And it has 237th place worldwide by scientific papers of Tai- wan
