Pre- Conference Press Note The First one-day SEMINAR on the ‘Life and Works of Poet Laureate Munshi Dwarka Pershad UFUQ’ will bring together scholars in the field of Literature for a comprehensive overview of the poet’s works, as part of 150th Birth Anniversary Celebration. His Highness Hon’ble Shri B.L. Joshi, Governor-UP will be the Chief Guest on the occasion. The speakers on the occasion are: Prof. Malikzada Manzoor Ahmed, Ex President, Urdu Academy-UP. Prof. Sharib Rudauldvi, Ex HOD, Deptt of Urdu, JNU Prof. Fazle Imam, Ex HOD, Deptt of Urdu, University of Allahabad Dr. Sudhakar Adeeb, Director, Hindi Sansthan (UP) Sri Abid Suhail, a renowned scholar and Sr. Journalist and Dr. Gopal Chaturvedi, Ex Director, Bhasha Sansthan (UP) Poet Laureate Munshi Dwarka Pershad ‘ufuq’ was a poetic genius of first rank and wrote in various genres of urdu literature. ‘Ufuq’ was a prolific writer famous specially for his gazal, musaddas, masnavi, rubai and qasida. His writings in nazm, tazkira, doha, geet, qata and mukhammas also enriched Urdu Literature. ‘Ufuq’s’ writings have a number of noteworthy characteristics, the most striking of which is the exceptional prominence of poetry. It was poetry that formed the chief outlet for artistic expression. His poetry shares origins and influences with other linguistic traditions – borrowing from Arabic and Persian. His writings had close affinity with Sanskrit. One of the most brilliant of these was Aryavart ki Tarikhi Azmat. His best known work is ‘Ramayan-Yak-Kafia. He wrote mainly on patriotic and ethical subjects. Ufuq is chiefly remembered as one of the most prominent Urdu poets writing at the turn of 20th century. Ufuq wrote on patriotism, on freedom struggle, on common man and on women’s condition. He advocated for reforms in society and liberalism in religion. Ufuq was a cautious poet. He was a prolific writer and wrote in different genres of literature, viz-poetry, prose, drama and novel. He also took out a Newspaper in Poetry. Moreover he translated many monumental works from Sanskrit and Hindi to Urdu. “This year’s seminar is particularly important as it will aim at reviving research work based on Ufuq’s works dealing with the areas of contemporary relevance”, says the convenor of the seminar, Dr Komal Bhatnagar. After the seminar a “Mushaira” has been organized to make the evening special. .
