Six Degrees of Review The Liberator to the Compromise of 1877 By - Tatiana Elizondo & Arely Amaro-Moreno The Liberator launched by William Lloyd Garrison (1831) ● a newspaper dedicated to the Anti-Slavery case It was the most influential antislavery newspaper of all in the pre-Civil War period of U.S. history. American Anti-Slavery Society •Main activist Garrison greatly helped launch the movement (1833) This society was a result of The Liberator and like the newspaper the Society was dedicated to the abolition of slavery in all of the United State.The societies sponsored meetings, adopted resolutions, signed antislavery petitions to be sent to Congress, published journals,printed and distributed propaganda in vast quantities, and sent out agents and lecturers to carry the antislavery message to Northern audiences. Civil War •The civil war era lasted from 1861-1865 Because of abolitionist ideas that occurred in the decades before, the civil war provided the opportunity for Northern Abolitionists to actively eliminate the institute of slavery within the south. The North’s greater manpower and industrial resources, the leadership of Abraham Lincoln, and the decision to emancipate slaves eventually led to the Union military victory over the Confederacy. 13th Amendment After the Union won in the civil war congress passed and the states ratified the 13th amendment which abolished any kind of slavery (except as punishment for a crime)within the United States. The 13th amendment, along with the 14th and 15th, expanded American citizen rights to their freedmen. Reconstruction The period after the Civil War that the U.S. entered in order to rebuild the nation, to readmit Southern states, and to enforce the new amendments, which the South resented very much. To achieve this, the southern states were split into 5 military districts and were filled with Union soldiers to keep former confederate states in check. Although, shortly after President Johnson had pardoned most Southerners, allowing former confederates to take power within the South, angering the North. The Compromise of 1877 A compromise that ended the reconstruction era due to the recent and intense presidential election between Hayes and Tilden.This compromise promised the republicans a win in the election as long as they pulled the last of their troops from the Southern states..
