The Cougars will be- come an independent in football while joining the West Coast Conference in all other sports. CSU’s coaches were split in their reactions to the shift, lamenting the loss of the traditional power in BYU but welcoming the challenge pre- sented by schools still in the conference. “I think it’s kind of silly to be honest,” Colo- rado State football coach Steve Fairchild said. “It’s sad when we lose some of the heritage and the rivalries that have existed for a while.” Fairchild said, however, that the 2012 ad- dition of Fresno State and Nevada, two “darn good football teams,” will help CSU’s status as a football conference. Boise State will become a member in 2011. The Cougars have gone 43-9 during the past four seasons, winning two conference titles ee By on Pae Rams out in the wilderness By AlliSON SylTe The Rocky Mountain Collegian Rodney Ley has climbed mountains all over the world, from 14ers in Colorado to massive peaks in Nepal and South America. “Doing things outdoors is all about getting away from the connectivity of day-to-day life,” Ley said. “It’s about removing yourself from a routine and doing something completely different.” Ley, a 59-year-old alumnus, has always loved the mountains. For him, mountaineering partially appealed to his penchant for non-con- formity and taking a walk on the wild side. He took pride in that while his classmates were at- tending football games, he was standing on the summits of 14ers. “Mountaineering is amazing because it al- ways delvers what it promises. Some football players never win the Super Bowl, but when you’re outdoors, you always win,” Ley said. This feeling inspired Ley to help birth the ee OTdOOR on Pae SAANTHA BAkeR C Senior environmental horticulture ma or TJ Meyer reattaches the rear derailleur on his road bicycle Wednesday afternoon at his apartment complex near Drake Road and Shields Street.
