No Memories I cherish from Ohio Wesleyan: Stimulating teachers, especially Benjamin Spencer, the track team, and Friars Club. How Ohio Wesleyan influenced my life: It opened my life to new possibilities, especially a better understanding of the Bible. Professor(s) I will always remember and why: Dr. Benjamin Spencer inspired me to a deep appreciation of books. My life since graduating from Ohio Wesleyan: Married Doris Justice (1946); three children, eight grandchildren, and six great grandchildren. Pastor in Baltimore-Washington Conference for 37 years. Led Commission on Town and Country work which developed parsonage standards for conference. Took a plane load of animals to our mission station in Bolivia (to be given to future farmers there). Spend a summer in Ghana helping to build an Agricultural storage shed that will increase food supply to local farmers. Other Important Information: We moved into Charlestown Retirement Community in 2003. Doris passed away in 2006 (60 years). I have given leadership in different local activities including President of our “Residents Council” in 2004-2005. I enjoy bowling (ten pins). No Memories I cherish from Ohio Wesleyan: Tri Delt initiation and activities including the National Convention at Mackinac Island. Evenings spent at the Jug and Zeldes. Appearances on stage in “Joan of Lorraine” and “The Circle.” And most of all the wonderful friends. Getting an A- on a paper from Dr. Spencer. Bridge and conversation in the smoker. Fraternity serenades and dances. Winning skit night two years in a row. How Ohio Wesleyan influenced my life: Our (compulsory) year of Bible has given me a lifelong familiarity with that book and I’ve often served as a worship leader in church. All of my English classes have been very useful in writing. Professor(s) I will always remember and why: Miss Ruth Davies- her English and humanities were always challenging and so was she Dr. Ben Spencer- his American Lit and Shakespeare classes were extremely demanding, but worth all the effort- we all loved him. Our son Ben is named for him. Professor McFarland’s classes were a joy. My life since graduating from Ohio Wesleyan: I was married to a brilliant architect in 1962 and became the instant mother of Matt and Jeff who were teenagers. In 1963 and 1966 Sue and Ben were born. All the children have done well. Matt is a poet and a retired English teacher. Jeff retired from the coast guard as a full commander, but is still working for the coast guard as a boat manager. Sue, who taught remedial English is now painting full-time, has won a best of show, and one of her landscapes was shown in a national competition in New York City. Ben is an electrical engineer currently installing a paint shop in an assembly plant. I’ve been a member of the junior league. Pit and Balcony community theatre, the Saginaw Hall of fame and humanities boards, serendipity, first congressional and old mission congressional churches, child and family services board. Other Important Information: I am currently working on my eight book. Subjects have mostly been in Michigan History and have included the biographies and works of a pair of artists (plus a catalogue of 1000 of their works.) Also, a historic cookbook with recipes dating back to the 1870’s, and a history of Shepler’s Mackinac Island Ferry. Awards include the Junior League Gold Rose for community service, the All Area Arts Award, and second place in the area Chili Cooking Contest. Yes Memories I cherish from Ohio Wesleyan: I met my wife there and was a Phi Kappa Psi. I am still in contact with some OWU friends. How Ohio Wesleyan influenced my life: OWU gave me a great scientific background for my Biology teaching. I especially remember the class in music appreciation. Professor(s) I will always remember and why: Dr. William Stull for Bird Study and a senior class where we were in the field studying the environment. Dr. George Burns and his spring flora class. My life since graduating from Ohio Wesleyan: After OWU, I went to Ohio State. There I received a Master's degree in Zoology and a Bachelor's degree in Education. I enjoyed teaching 10th grade Biology and had various summer jobs. Barb and I were two of five who formed the Kelley’s Island Landowners Association in 1974, and is still in existence. Other important information: I had polio as a junior in high school and now have post-polio which affects my walking. Maybe Memories I cherish from Ohio Wesleyan: Bill and I met there during Zoology class. We married in our senior year. I relish the many memories of walking around Delaware, making new friends and spending my freshman year with a high school friend. How Ohio Wesleyan influenced my life: The classes in math and science have given me a terrific basis for my life. Bill and I enjoy birds and nature and have passed that joy to our five married children. We also find that our interests have been passed on to grandchildren (9) and great grandchildren (7.) I have always said my time at Wesleyan gave me a foundation for further education. Professor(s) I will always remember and why: Dr. William Stull - Ornithology and zoology; Dr. George Burns - Spring Flora and botany; Dr. Sydney Rowland, an astute advisor and professor. My life since graduating from Ohio Wesleyan: After raising five children, I studied at Kent State University receiving degrees in Library Science and Education. For 27 years I was a Media Specialist in Lakewood. In 1974 Bill and I were two of five who initiated the Kelley’s Island Landowners Association. I was President for several terms and served as newsletter editor for about six years. Since retiring, I have been a docent at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History and volunteered in Entomology with 5000 volunteer hours. Other important information: Kelley’s Island is our second home and we have spent many weekends there. Our home was built in 1864 and still has no utilities. Being an R.A for freshman at Stuyvesant when that was almost a new building. How Ohio Wesleyan influenced my life: Ohio Wesleyan was a place where I could really come into my own, encouraged, and not held back. Professor(s) I will always remember and why: Goldie McCue, Robert Hutchinson. They loved their subjects and us too. I remember a spiced (not spiked) tea party at Goldie’s special little house. My life since graduating from Ohio Wesleyan: I was a D.R.E in Connecticut for one year before marrying an Episcopal clergy seminary student and learned about the south in Virginia. He then became UCC and we lived and raised our kids and retired in Connecticut. They sorted themselves out to supply all our needs! We have a computer expert who just returned from Egypt helping set up a high school math and science programs, a judge, a food specialist for Bon Appetite, then Rachael Ray, a neurologist and a contractor and carpenter. I am now a spiritual director, trained at Shalem in D.C. We had many trips to Puerto Rico, Jamaica, China, South Korana and especially momentous year in South African with the family. Other important information: The most sensational event was discovering my sister, 50 years after we had been separated at a Methodist orphanage. “Woven Together” is a fairly recent book I wrote about that experience.
