Methodists commend Nene Resignation and welcome Mboweni Appointment The Methodist Church of Southern Africa welcomes President Cyril Ramaphosa’s acceptance of former Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene’s resignation following shocking revelations about his questionable meetings with the embattled Gupta family, having previously denied these. The appointment of Tito Mboweni, the 10th Minister of Finance since the advent of democracy, heralds an attempt by the Ramaphosa Administration to usher in accountable and credible leadership to regain market confidence critical to robust economic development. “Mr. Nhlanhla Nene is commended on falling on his sword and resigning,” said Bishop Zipho Siwa, Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church of Southern Africa. “His apology must be accepted in the context of encouraging other ministers caught up in similar webs of deception to follow his example in order to rebuild confidence and trust in our institutions and the people who lead them.” The appointment of Tito Mboweni, a seasoned economist with vast experience in finance and governance, will hopefully steer the country through these difficult and volatile economic times. The South Africa economy needs innovative thinking by seasoned technocrats and the introduction of fiscal policies that will curb the ever increasing unemployment rate and high cost of living. It is our hope that the Zondo Commission will, in time, expose the full extent of state capture and bring those implicated in graft to justice. This change in the treasury signals a new beginning in the fight against unbridled corruption which has stifled economic progress. Released on behalf of: Bishop Zipho Siwa .
