Jakarta is rich with historical places and cultural heritage. “The Old Town” is surrounded by several Dutch colonial buildings and architecture. The National Monument as the landmark of Jakarta stands at the center of the city. Other landmarks include the Istiqlal Mosque and Jakarta Cathedral. Jakarta Night Life Night life in Jakarta starts late, which means around midnight. Everybody looking for some action and fun in the evening goes to “Kemang”. Located in South Jakarta, many expatriates choose to live in this area and spend a top evening – out and indulge in a great place at Kemang. MUST SEE • Ondel – Ondel, large puppet dance, is a Betawi folk performances are often in popular festivities. • Ronggeng Betawi Dance – a very enchanting dance and is usually performed by 6 – 8 girls. • Mask Dance, is a Betawi folk dance theater. Mask Dance performances usually accompanied by music rebab, gendang, kromong and gong. • Lenggang Nyai Jakarta Dance – a new creation of traditional dance work, very graceful dance performed by group of six or more. • Gambang Kromong is a traditional Betawi music – a mixture between Betawi and Chinese music. • Tanjidor – a mixture between Betawi and Portuguese music and consist of wind instrument. MUST TRY Traditional Jakarta Food • Nasi Uduk, the rice is steamed in pandan leaf and coconut milk and served with other side dishes such as Indonesian fried chickens, eggs, cuttlefishes and many more. 4 • Soto Betawi, along with a coconut milk soup, slices of meat, lemon and chilly are amongst the ingredi- ents that make a true favorites dish. • Rujak Juhi, this famous Jakarta dish are based on peanut sauce, added with some spicy and light salti- ness of the sauce, served with noodles, tofu, boiled diced potatoes and cucumbers make this dish a win- ner. • Gado – gado, this dish is a mixture of various type of vegetables served in a sultry peanut sauce. • Ketoprak, they can be considered siblings to Gado – Gado, both of them use the same main ingredient, a peanut sauce, however, in Ketoprak, the presence of garlic aroma is more evident. Please note: Passports with an expiry date at less than six months beyond the expected date of departure from Indonesia may be refused. VISAS As of May 28, 2007 Indonesia revised its visa system for leisure (holiday) visitors and countries are now divided into three categories. Please check these lists carefully as for a significant number of countries, this new policy means potential visitors have to obtain a visa in advance at an Indonesian Embassy and cannot obtain a visa on arrival as they previously did. 5 1. Eleven countries whose citizens are eligible for free visas on arrival. Brunei, Chile, Hong Kong, Macau, Malaysia, Morocco, Peru, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, & Vietnam. 2. Sixty Three countries whose citizens can obtain visas on arrival but must pay a modest fee. - USD 10.00 for a maximum period of 7 (seven) days - USD 25.00 for more than 7 days and up to a maximum period of 30 (thirty) days. All other countries must obtain a visa from an Indonesian Embassy. Passport holders of all other countries not listed above are NOT eligible for visas on arrival (either free or fee-based) and will be refused entry on arrival at an Indonesian gateway (airport or seaport). Immigration clearance or Calling Visa is needed for those who do not have Indonesian Embassy or Consulate in their country. Therefore potential visitors from these countries must apply for and receive a visa from the nearest Indonesian Embassy before departure. AIRPORT & TAXES Soekarno-Hatta International Airport is located approximately 26 km west of the city, or about a 40-minutes drive to the heart of the business district where many of the major hotels are located. International flights come in and out of Terminal 2, while local flights use either Terminal 1 or 2. Travelers departing from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport are required to pay an airport tax of: • Rp. 150,000 (equiv. USD 11) for International travel • Rp. 40,000 for domestic travel • Payable after check-in at the airport. WEATHER Jakarta lying near the equator has a hot and humid tropical wet and dry climate. Temperature between 24˚c - 34˚c (75˚F - 91˚F) year around. Wet seasons in Jakarta cover the majority of the year, running from November through June. Jakarta's wet season rainfall peak is January, and the rest the rain tends to be intermittent, however, with plenty of sun in between. The remaining four months forms the city’s dry season.
