Building Verbs Basic Explanation: Compound verb phrases use 2 verbs together. The first verb is the helping (or building) verb. The second is an infinitive. An infinitive is the “name of the verb” or unconjugated form of the verb. In English, infinitives always starts with “to” (to work, to go, to sing, to fly, etc.) In Spanish, infinitives end with “-ar”, ‘-er”, or “-ir” (hablar, estudiar, comer, vivir, etc.) On your yellow sheet, entitled “Verbos Esenciales para Español 2”, you have a list of 142 infinitives that you will need to know by the end of the year. You already know many of them. In this unit you will learn to use the helping/building verbs from the pink sheet with the infinitives on the yellow sheet. To form compound verbs, you will conjugate (use the form that tells who is doing the action) the first verb (from the pink sheet) and use the infinitive of the second verb (from the yellow sheet.) For example: The conjugated forms of necesitar are: (find them on the pink sheet in the middle of the left column). Necesito (I need) Necesitas (you need) Necesita (he/she/you polite need/s) Necesitamos (we need) Necesitan (they need) Put any of the above forms with any of the verbs on the yellow sheets. For example: I need to study: Necesito estudiar You need to read: Necesitas leer We need to play: Necesitamos jugar He needs to sleep: Necesita dormir I need to go: Necesito ir They need to explain: Necesitan explicar They need to leave: Necesitan salir Identify the following as either an Infinitive or Conjugated Verb 1. ____________ The “name” of the verb. 2. ____________ In Spanish these always end in “-ar”, “-er”, or “-ir”. 3. ____________ In English these always start with “to”. 4. ____________A form of a verb whose ending tells you who is doing the action. 5. ______________In Span. these will end with o, as, es, a, e, amos, emos, imos, an, en. 6. ______________ In English the “he/she” ending for these is usually “s”.
