April 18 all day and for Thurs. Apr. 19 in the morning. 1. Here is some general information on using the RR: In order to consult materials in the Reading Room, you will need to fill out an application form, provide a letter of reference from a professional colleague, bring a valid form of photo identification such as a driver's license or passport, and make appointments in advance. We suggest at least two to three weeks' advance notice, as we do get booked up. Please note that we cannot accept an emailed letter of reference as we need a signature, but we can accept it by fax (the fax number is below). The Reading Room is open by appointment only, Monday to Friday, 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM,and is closed on weekends and holidays. You can fill out the application form at your first appointment. Please note that the Reading Room will be closed to readers on the following Mondays and holidays in 2007: April 30, May 21 and 28, June 25, July 4 and 30, Sept. 3, Oct. 8, Nov. 12, Nov. 22-23, Dec. 24- 25. After we have confirmed your appointments, we will send you the security information you will need to access this building. You will also need to send us a list of exactly which materials you would like to consult in advance of your visit, as we have to get them approved by the curators and prepare them before you arrive. Please check our online catalogue, Corsair for this information( http://corsair.morganlibrary.org/). We will need author, title, accession number AND call number. It would also be helpful to the curators if you would briefly explain your research project--sometimes they are able to suggest other materials, perhaps things that are not yet catalogued. Please note that Christine Nelson has waived the letter of reference. 2. And here is the security information that you need to enter the building: The following is the information you will need regarding security procedures for entering the building, as well as the address. Please print out and save this information: Please come to the new Staff& Visitor Entrance at 24 East 37th Street, near Madison Avenue, and announce yourself to the guard on duty. Your name will be on an appointment list with the guard. You will be shown where to check your coats and bags, and will then be directed to the Reading Room. You may want to bring a sweater with you, however, as the Reading Room is rather cool. Also, please note that guests are not permitted in the Reading Room. You may bring a laptop computer with you, but please do not bring suitcases to the Morgan. Readers are not permitted to take photographs. The Reading Room hours are Monday to Friday, 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM, by appointment only. We are 4/17/2007 Page 2 of 3 closed on weekends and holidays. If you cannot keep your appointment, please let us know as soon as possible, as we reserve seats for our readers and if you cannot come, we can release your seat to another reader. Please note that the Reading Room hours are different from the Museum hours. For your information, the exhibitions are closed on Mondays. Please make sure to bring a valid form of photo identification with you, such as your driver's license or passport, and bring it with you to the Reading Room. Is there any way that I could come Monday and Tuesday (16-17th) or Tuesday and Wednesday (17-18th) of that week instead? It would be great if you could tell me as soon as possible so that I can make my travel arrangements. I'd like to visit the Morgan Library because I'm doing research concerning JP Morgan Jr.'s involvement with Bell telephone (AT&T) at the turn of the century for a book about the evolution of telecommunications in the 20th century. ADMINISTRATIVE INFORMATION Processing information This collection is not fully processed. In many cases the original file titles have been transcribed from the old folders and no further processing or description has yet been undertaken. Original file folders have been discarded and replaced with acid-free folders; for the second half of the collection (rehoused in 2003) the original file tabs were retained. An initial typed inventory of this collection was presumably made by Library volunteers; it was checked and augmented in 2003. Introductory information by Christine Nelson, 2004. Provenance Personal papers of J. P. Morgan Jr. removed from the offices of J. P. Morgan & Co. by Charles Morgan, grandson of J. P. Morgan Jr. Gift of the Morgan family,[date unknown].
