CONSTRUCTION UPDATE I-70 Overlay EJMT - Georgetown Overview: Last month, the Colorado Georgetown Lake Department of Transportation TO DENVER (CDOT) began resurfacing a 13- Eisenhower-Johnson PROJECT END Memorial Tunnel Mile 226 mile segment of eastbound I-70 Georgetown 70 in Clear Creek County to tackle 70 roadway surface and bridge PROJECT START Mile 215 :Work Area issues along the corridor and :Tunnel End 6 Loveland provide a smoother, safer ride TO DILLON Pass Rd :Bridges for motorists. The construction TO KEYSTONE zone extends from the Eisenhower Johnson Memorial Tunnels (EJMT) to just outside of Georgetown. The project is expected to be completed by the end of September. According to CDOT Project Engineer James Van Dyne, “With the onset of warmer weather, we want to manage issues with deterioration of the pavement and bridges caused by tire chains, deicing chemicals and heavy vehicle use that occur during winter.” Progress: Despite adverse weather conditions, the project remains on schedule, with crews working throughout the night to minimize traffic interruption. Newly completed work includes bridge repairs on eastbound and westbound I-70 near the Loveland Ski Area (Mile Marker 216). US 6 eastbound from Loveland Pass was closed for the duration of the project. US 6 travelers are advised to use I-70 eastbound Exit 218 as a detour to connect to I-70 westbound. Nighttime paving operations have started and will be completed in July. Crews are removing and replacing approximately two miles of asphalt pavement per night, weather permitting. Upcoming Schedule and Impacts: Motorists can expect 24-hour single lane closures on the bridges, from midnight on Sunday to 11:30 a.m. on Friday, for approximately two weeks per bridge. Now that the weather has improved, project team members expect more travelers to pass through the work area. Travelers who are exercising patience and attention to speed reduction Crews perform concrete work. requirements are greatly appreciated by the crews who are working hard to help build better roads for Colorado. There are no expected weekend traffic delays, but speed reduction requirements will remain posted to ensure public safety. Please obey posted speed limits within the construction zone. The project team cares about the safety of both the crew as well as motorists, and asks that travelers take extra caution in the construction zone. Once paving and bridge work have been completed, crews will work on drainage issues, such as culvert and inlet repairs.
