Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation Exhibits Coordinator, on a tour of the Libraries’ exhibition galleries and learn about the materials on display, including Virginia Woolf’s writing desk, a beautiful print by Paul Revere of the Boston Massacre, a dazzling display of Haggadah from our library collections, and materials from Maria de Bruyn’s papers in the Josiah Charles Trent History of Medicine Room. • Digital Production Center Join Molly Bragg, Digital Collections Program Manager, and John Gartrell, Director of the John Hope Franklin Research Center, as they talk about the digitization of the American Slavery Documents Collection. For more information, visit http://nasher.duke.edu/abney. • All Matterings of Mind: Transcendent Imagery from the Contemporary Collection: Selections from the contemporary collection present highly altered or enhanced views of the world through approximately 40 mystical, magical or dreamlike artworks, many on view for the first time. 10:30 – 11:45 a.m. Tour of the Duke Farm Vans depart from the Shuttle Zone at 10:30 a.m. This family-friendly experience will include tours of the Duke Campus Farm’s organically grown produce and mushroom operations and a conversation about the farm's role in building sustainable food systems. Seed- planting opportunities and lawn games will also be available. To learn more about the farm, visit its website or follow it on Facebook. 10:30 a.m. – noon Lemur Center Tour 1 Bus departs from the Shuttle Zone at 10:30 a.m. Nestled in the Duke Forest is the most internationally known research and conservation facility for lemurs, the Duke Lemur Center. Established in 1966, the DLC is home to the world’s largest and most diverse collection of lemurs outside of their native Madagascar. Because of gravel paths, walking shoes are necessary. Div. ’74, Yale MBA ’87, CFA ‘92 • Sumi Kim: Buddhist Chaplain at Duke; Harvard M. Div. Mindfulness has proven to be effective in pain management, stress reduction (e.g., Duke Integrative Medicine) and a number of psychological disorders. It is now becoming more mainstream in professional and organizational development programs in business (e.g., Google, Target, General Mills, etc.). This discussion will draw upon research and personal experience to provide some insight into what the Mindfulness practice is and how it may potentially impact physical, emotional, cognitive and spiritual levels of our lives and work. Roy Maurer has a 30+ year career as a corporate executive and management consultant. He is a partner with The Clarion Group advising senior executives on strategy and leadership development. In between his M. Div. and MBA, Roy spent several years living in Zen Buddhist and Christian monastic settings and pursuing long, intensive retreats in Mindfulness meditation, as well as teaching religion, ethics and psychology. Lemur Center Tour 6: 3:30 – 5:00 p.m., Sat. 1:30 – 3:00 p.m. The Development and Impact of the Marijuana Industry Social Sciences 139 Duke University graduate Malik Burnett T’07, B’11, M’12 will be speaking on the impact and growth of the marijuana industry in the United States. As a resident physician in preventive medicine at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, Dr. Burnett works to advance the broader drug policy reform agenda with the goal of shifting U.S. drug policy from a framework based on criminal justice to one based on public health. His passion for drug policy is rooted in eliminating the racial disparities which exist in enforcement practices, in addition to the increasing cost-effectiveness of drug policy by focusing on health and human rights-based programs. As a policy manager at the Drug Policy Alliance’s Office of National Affairs during 2014-15, he successfully co- chaired the Initiative 71 campaign, a ballot measure legalizing the possession of cannabis in the nation’s capital, garnering the support of 70 percent of voters. He continues to work with the local and state governments to advance drug policy reform legislation around the country. Dr. Burnett attended Duke University for nine years as a student, where he completed a five-year joint M.D. and M.B.A. program, after previously completing a B.S. in Psychology. At Duke he was very active advocating on behalf of students and under-served communities, and served as a Trustee on the Duke University Board of Trustees. 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. Climb the Rock Wall in Wilson Wilson Recreation Center The wall stands 35 feet tall with 11 ropes and over 1400 square feet of climbing surface. With routes range from beginner to advanced, there are plenty of opportunities for you to learn or progress your climbing skills. All equipment including climbing shoes, harnesses and belay devices are available for use at no cost. All children must be 10 or older, and a parent or guardian must be present. Please wear comfortable clothing and socks to wear with climbing shoes. Available on a first-come, first-served basis. 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. The DiVE (Duke immersive Virtual Environment) Room 1667A,FCIEMAS, West Campus Come explore this 10-foot cubic room with computer-generated displays on walls, ceiling and floor that create a three dimensional world. Stereo goggles and a special wand help immerse visitors in worlds that react to where they look, step and reach. This NSF-funded facility promotes novel research in human-computer interaction, neuroscience, scientific visualization, cognitive studies, and is heavily used in teaching science, engineering, humanities, and art.
