Directory of Useful Contacts Hulme Hall and Burkhardt House | Official Handbook 2016-17 Page | 3 Hello and Welcome to Hulme Hall and Burkhardt House, I am Mike Mercer, the Residential Life Officer (RLO). During the day I work as one of the managers in the Student Services Centre on the main campus on Oxford Road and in the evenings I manage the team of Residential Life Advisors (RLAs) that live here at Hulme. I also live on site so you will see me around quite a bit, usually in the dining room or the bar. It is my job primarily to make sure that our Hall is a safe, secure and vibrant community that helps you settle into life in Manchester and The University. Having lived and worked in Manchester for over 15 years I consider myself to be almost a local, although as a native Liverpudlian my allegiances are split! University and in particular first year hall life can be one of the best times of your life, so please make the most of the events and facilities on offer in our hall. The Junior Common Room (JCR) exists to run events and activities that you want so please get involved and join in where you can, if we are not doing things you want to do ask us! I think you have made the best possible choice of Hall, but I am biased! Please don't hesitate to contact me or any of the RLAs about any aspects of living in Hulme Hall and Burkhardt House as we are here to help you. Have a great year and I look forward to meeting you all during the coming weeks. Mike Mercer RLO Hulme Hall and Burkhardt House | Official Handbook 2016-17 Page | 4 Your ResLife Team Welcome Anna Neale SRLA - Oaklands and Christie My name is Anna and I am one of the Senior RLAs as well as the RLA for Oaklands and Christie. This will be my fifth year as a RLA, and my third year at Hulme. I'm from Liverpool and I came to this university eight years ago to study for my undergraduate degree. I loved it here and I've been here ever since. I am currently studying for a PhD in music, focusing on the music of Beethoven. I love rock music, football (I support Everton, of course), and generally having a laugh. It's my job to make sure that this year at Hulme is one of the best years of your life. If you have a problem, need advice, or just want a chat then please get in touch with me or any member of the Reslife team. I'm looking forward to meeting you all. Julia Lawson SRLA – Greenwood Hello and Welcome to Hulme Hall and Burkhardt! I’m Julia, the other Senior RLA and also RLA for Greenwood Block. I did my BSc and MSc courses in Manchester studying textiles – with that comes a love for creative ‘stuff’ - polka dots, colouring, design… it’s a long list… but I also love baking, music, shows and getting the giggles. Be sure to keep an eye out for all the in-hall events, ranging from Open-Mic Nights, Cheese and Wine Evenings, Comedy Nights and the Harry Potter Formal Dinner. I really look forward to meeting you all and hope you have an amazing year! Enjoy it as much as you can because believe me, it goes so fast! Richard Boyle RLA – Plymouth Hi guys, I’m Richard! I’m a second year medic. My first degree was at Warwick and included an Erasmus year in Berlin, so I know first-hand how daunting it can be to adapt to a new country or area. Your time in Manchester will be completely what you make of it: experiences don’t always land at your feet but the University has a fantastic amount to offer you if you get out there and find what interests you. Remember that the Reslife team is here to support you and feel free to contact me, or any other RLA, if you need any help or just want to say hello. Salvador Pacheco Gutierrez RLA – Oaklands and Christie Welcome to Manchester! This is my fifth year here and I love it. You are coming not only to the best University but to the best city in the UK. I am a PhD student here trying to reinvent the wheel but while that happens I will be here to help you in anything you need. I will try to keep you informed of all events happening in hall and provide you support in any matter. I really wish you all the best in Manchester! Hulme Hall and Burkhardt House | Official Handbook 2016-17 Page | 5 Ashkan Nazary RLA – Houldsworth Hi All, Welcome to Hulme and Burkhardt! My name is Ashkan. Hulme & Burkhardt Hall is known to be one of the best Halls, if not the best, because of its location, fantastic facilities and also because of its student friendly teams (Reslife Team, Housekeeping, Catering, Porters and JCR). We are all here to ensure that you are having the best time while living here. So it is quite safe to say the best year of your life is waiting for you at Hulme so make the most of it by taking part in JCR events and try to join our sport teams, football, rugby and netball. Looking forward meeting you all! Vas Sevastos RLA – Birley Hi all, I’m Vasilis from Greece. I finished my MSc Degree in Computer Science and now work in IT for the Postgraduate Pharmacy department at the Stopford building, so, you may see me in there from time to time. I enjoy traveling, watching football (Panathinaikos & West Ham United), nights in, nights out, and spending time with friends. Hulme Hall is a great, vibrant place, full of interesting people from different backgrounds. I have spent four years here as a RLA and I am really looking forward getting to know everyone. Anna Baker RLA – Burkhardt Hi everyone! I’m Anna, and I’m one of the Residential Life Advisors for Burkhardt. I’ve just finished my undergraduate degree in Music and I now work in the Peer Support Office at the University. I’m so excited to get to know you all and welcome you to what I think is the best Hall of Residence here at Manchester (though, you could say I’m biased…). I know how daunting moving somewhere new is, so we’re making sure we have some great socials planned for the next year to help you settle in. RLAs are also on hand for any other aspects of Halls life that you need us for, so please say hi when you see me! Mike Hale RLA – Burkhardt Hey everyone, I’m Mike and I’m a newbie in Burkhardt House just like you! I came to Manchester seven years ago, fell in love with UoM and never left! My undergrad degree was in Engineering, and I now work as a finance assistant in the Sport Department. I love anything and everything to do with Sport, Music and getting outdoors, so when I’m not around halls I’ll be out climbing in the Peak District, or cycling around Manchester. I can’t wait to spend time around Hulme getting to know you all, so come and say hi if you see me around You’re in the best city, at the best uni, and this year will fly past in no time… make sure you enjoy it!
