It presents a quantitative insight into the composition and dynamics of this sub-sector, using a spreadsheet database compiled for all identifiable serviced accommodation providers in Scotland. The purpose of the database is to provide material to support research into the online practices of serviced accommodation providers. The data was gathered from four main sources or directories. This was used to calculate the population of serviced accommodation providers. This provides a benchmark to evaluate other findings, including the significance of the different directory channels. An analysis of the database allowed the compilation of 73 tables on a variety of issues, which are presented here. This provides an insight into the heterogeneity of serviced accommodation providers, the geographical distribution of this heterogeneous group and the manner they have engaged with VisitScotland and associated organisations, e.g. visitscotland.com.
