Translated out of Latine into English, by William Adlington. London: Printed by Thomas Harper for Thomas Alchorn, 1639]. 8vo. (18), 102, 123 (misnumbered 121) - 227 (misnumbered 14), 281-287 pp, with numerous other mispaginations, with the first four leaves, including the title page and the final leaf, supplied in slightly crude facsimile. Attractively bound in 20th century maroon full morocco, spine with raised bands, gilt lettered direct to three panels and misdated at the foot, blind and gilt ruled border extending across the spine and both boards with diagonal gilt rules also emanating from the bands, gilt inner dentelles, decorative gold patterned endpapers, all edges gilt. The paper darkened fairly evenly throughout, last original leaf (Gg3) trimmed close and the margin restored. £450 Adlington’s translation was the first in English and was originally published in 1566. Another three editions were issued by 1596; this was the fifth edition overall. The translation was still being used well into 20th century, being the text used for the Wordsworth Classics series. Publisher’s cloth, the first volume with silver lettering to the spine, the other two lettered in gilt, dust jackets, first two not price clipped although the front flap of the first work features a Book Society price label. “My Family...” signed by the author as “Gerald M. Durrell” on the front free endpaper, original owner’s name handwritten on the verso with what appears to be typewritten school essay questions loosely inserted to the back of the book which have been neatly transcribed onto the rear free endpaper. Sunning to the jacket spine of “My Family” which also shows some small loss at the head, the exposed cloth faded underneath, and a little light wear to the corners, the other two in very good condition.
