Update No. 207 – Locked Down – Weekend Wasted

Parnell Cricket Club Incorporated - Established 1858 Update No. 207 – Locked Down – Weekend Wasted Very sad – Weekend playing days are precious, scarce pleasure time for sport and to lose this whole weekend was just tragic – from the 5year olds on Friday evening, all Junior Grades, all Adult Grades – Club and Schools cancelled. Considerable sympathy for Auckland Cricket – they had no choice but to cancel – Government dictate. And NZ Cricket, too, at least saved the Australian Tour by moving T20Is to Wellington Saturday morning, 10.00 am – the view from my kitchen. Instead of heading to Shore Road to see grandson play in the morning and then on to see the Prems vs Grafton United, Jenny and I cleaned the oven ……… Let’s make up for it on 14 March Jeff Crowe Cup Final Limited Overs (50) Championship Parnell vs Howick Pakuranga At Shore Road Reserve from 11 am In recent years Parnell has won the Cup 3 times 2009/10, 2012/13 and 2018/19 Please come and support your Team and see some outstanding cricket! Past Jeff Crowe Cup successes: 2009/10 Suburbs New Lynn vs Parnell Ken Maunder Pk SUBURBS NL 121/10 (43.3) B Rowland 20, V Davies 21, James Walsh 9. 3. 20. 3 Chas Keogh 9. 0. 33. 4 Brad Winger 9. 3. 14. 2 Shoruban Pasupati 10. 4. 26. 0 Dave Goddard 7. 1. 23. 1 FOW: 15/1, 18/2, 19/3, 21/4, 41/5, 62/6, 88/7, 121/8, 121/9, 121/10 PARNELL Dave Houpapa b Davies 7 (7) Kirk Bunting b Neesham 5 (9) Will Brittain lbw Neesham 4 (13) Mark Turner c Bassett-Graham b Neesham 10 (34) Ryan Turner b Neesham 14 (19) Doug Winger not out 38 (132) Dave Goddard c Bassett-Graham b Soni 0 (3) Chas Keogh c Jacobs b Patel 11 (24) Brad Winger c & b Patel 1 (16) Shoruban Pasupati st Bassett-Graham b Patel 11 (22) James Walsh not out 6 (22) TOTAL 123/9 (50 overs) FOW: 13/1, 13/2, 21/3, 42/4, 45/5, 46/6, 58/7, 71/8,90/9 RESULT: Parnell won by 1 wicket and so captured the Jeff Crowe Cup James Walsh and Doug Winger - 33* for the 10th wicket to win The Victors’ Celebration Suburbs won the toss and batted but our attack struck early removing Jeet Raval, Jacobs, Michael Barry and Jimmy Neesham with only 42 on the board. Barry Rowland held us up along with Nolan (19) and Hick (17) and Victor Davies but each of our bowlers made their mark and 121 looked a doddle to better. Not so – our batsmen had the same problems, Jimmy Neesham (one of our Juniors not long before) tore us apart. And then Patel with his spin. Skipper, Doug Winger, didn’t give up though and, after the Turner brothers had gone, he was assisted by some dogged resistance from Chas, Brad and Shoruban. But, when Shoruban was stumped with the total only 90, still 32 needed and no. 11 Jimmy Walsh coming to the wicket, all seemed lost. Doug hung in, so did Walshy, they scratched singles, the score mounted slowly, time started to run out – tension rose. The 49th over went and Jeet Raval took the ball for the final over, 5 balls gone, 117 on the board – 4 to tie, 5 to win – Jeet bowled the last ball and Doug drove it high and long into the far estuary! Six off the last ball – what an extraordinary game. Jubilation for our players and a result still well remembered by Suburbs players. Their Scorer, Donners, still mutters imprecations at the mention of the names of either Doug or Walshy and it is notable that whilst we have no current player from that game, Jimmy Neesham and Jeet Raval are still playing at top level and Michael Barry, Victor Davies and Johnny Bassett-Graham played against us just 2 weeks ago – Barry scoring a superb 127. Not forgetting Barrington Rowland who is having an outstanding season for Papatoetoe. 2012/13 Parnell vs East Coast Bays Eden Park no. 2 PARNELL Ben Rae c Briggs b Deeble 14 (14) Will Brittain c White b Schmulian 53 (81) Kirk Bunting c McCully b Mimmack 11 (34) Ben Horne b Schmulian 22 (27) Angus McLean run out 10 (15) Dave Goddard run out 42 (53) Cam Rope c Lipshaw b Schmulian 1 (10) Lockie Ferguson c Ridge b Deeble 36 (28) James Nicol not out 9 (10) James Walsh run out 4 ( 4) Mike Ravlic did not bat Extras 6 TOTAL: 208/9 (46 overs) FOW: 22/1, 45/2, 78/3, 112/4, 114/5, 118/6, 180/7, 199/8, 208/9 EAST COAST BAYS D Dempsey c Goddard b Ravlic 1 Lockie Ferguson 8. 0. 43. 1 C Elliott c Rope b Walsh 19 Mike Ravlic 7. 2. 17. 4 C Ridge c Goddard b Ravlic 0 James Walsh 6. 0. 29. 3 B Schmulian c Horne b Walsh 4 James Nicol 9. 1. 33. 1 M Mimmack c Horne b Walsh 1 Dave Goddard 10. 0. 37. 0 D Deeble c Rae b Ravlic 55 Ben Horne 2. 0. 4. 1 R Lane c Horne b Ferguson 47 J McCully b Nicol 0 N White c McLean b Ravlic 28 C Briggs b Horne 1 S Lipshaw not out 0 Extras: 14 TOTAL 170/10 (40.3 overs) FOW: 4/1, 7/2, 29/3, 30/4, 34/5, 90/6, 92/7, 168/8, 170/9, 170/10 RESULT: Parnell won by 38 runs and so captured the Jeff Crowe Cup Eden Park – late start due to early morning drizzle Mike Ravlic – Man of the Match Skipper Will Britten with the Cup What a joy to play at Eden Park – the most appropriate venue for the Final. Early morning drizzle delayed the start and the game was reduced to 46 overs each. Weather cleared. ground finally ready, ECB won the toss, decided to bowl and it was all on! Ben Rae started briskly but was caught behind at 22. Kirk joined his Skipper but he, too, left early and Ben Horne came to the crease. Will was going well and Ben raced to 22 before being bowled by one of Schmulian’s leggies. Will brought up his 50 and whilst Angus was run out, Will and Dave Goddard steadied the ship but Schumulian snared Will and the situation looked decidedly shaky until Lockie struck some good blows and, with Dave regained the initiative. Dave being also run out didn’t help but a fluurry from Jimmy Nicol and Walshy got us over 200. Enough …..?? It certainly looked enough as Mike Ravlic, in his epic season, had both Dempsey and Ridge very smartly caught by Dave. 7/2 was soon 34/6 – Lockie was wicketless but his pace helped first Rav and then Walshy rattle ECB’s top order. Score mounted but Walshy took 2 wickets in the 90s. Deeble with Richard Lane then had a dangerous partnership. Re-enter Rav to have Deeble caught by Ben Rae. Jimmy Nicol skittled McCully for 0. Nick White was fighting back but Ben Horne handed the gloves to Kirk and bowled Briggs. Rav then had White caught by Angus and the Cup and the champagne was ours! 2018/19 Parnell vs Suburbs New Lynn Eden Park no. 2 PARNELL Ben Rae c Bassett-Graham b Meenhorst 40 (30) Ben Rainger c & b Watson 27 (48) Andy Land c Cracknell b Murray 84 (108) Ollie Pringle c Devereaux b Meenhorst 74 (67) Brad Rodden b Devereaux 39 (34) Aniket Parikh not out 54 (28) Dean van Deventer not out 19 (14) Josh Fisher ) Harry Miller ) Henry King ) did not bat Ganesh Ratnasabapathy ) Extras 25 TOTAL 362/5 (50 overs) FOW: 56/1, 110/2, 222/3, 263/4, 296/5, SUBURBS NEW LYNN R Majithia c Rodden b King 26 Ollie Pringle 6. 0. 43. 0 J Cracknell c Ratnasabapathy b King 50 Ganesh Ratnasabapathy 10. 0. 64. 3 M Barry c Rodden b Ratnasabapathy 70 Henry King 9. 0. 35. 4 J Parslow c Miller b King 6 Josh Fisher 6.2. 0 32. 0 V Davies c & b Parikh 12 Aniket Parikh 7. 0. 34. 2 M Murray b Parikh 9 J Bassett-Graham not out 30 D Watson c Rodden b Ratnasabapathy 0 J McLeod c Miller b King 3 S Devereaux c Miller b Ratnasabapathy 0 E Meenhorst run out 1 Extras 4 TOTAL 211/10 (38.2) FOW: 68/1, 84/2, 113/3, 133/4, 164/5, 198/6, 198/7, 203/8, 204/9. 211/10 RESULT: Parnell won by 151 runs and so captured the Jeff Crowe Cup THE SCENE: Eden Park again, a fine morning, our Team assembled early along with a large retinue of Juniors in their Parnell whites. Our Team and the Support Team before the game Our Prems warmed up, Andy Lane and Ben Rainger then put the Juniors through their drills and the Prem Women were out in force! THE GAME: Parnell Skipper Brad Rodden won the toss and elected to bat on a top Eden Park track. Ben Rae got off to a cracking start but, with 50 up, he was caught behind in the 8th over, his 40 off just 30 balls. Ben Rainger was more circumspect but Andy, in at 3, kept the momentum going. 100 up in no time but, with spin introduced, Dane Watson caught and bowled Ben – 110/2. Ollie joined Andy and the pace upped further - they doubled the score in the next 19 overs.
