Traffic by Trade Routes for July 1940 The movement of vessels over the various trade routes contributory to the Canal is summarized in the table below. In connection with this table the traffic passing through the Canal has been segregated according to the primary origin and ultimate destination of the voyage and the cargo listed is the total aboard at the time of transit. As cargo frequently is laden or discharged at ports en route, the cargo tonnage figures shown opposite each trade route do not necessarily show the actual cargo tonnage passing through the Canal between the two terminal areas indicated by the trade route: Atlantic to Pacific Pacific to Atlantic Trade routes No. Tons Panama Tons of Canal net of Canal net of ships tonnage cargo tonnage cargo United States intercoastal 249,566 235,265 182,896 295,144 East coast United States and: Canada 6,959 2,734 2,319 3,052 Central America/Mexico 31,440 9,047 26,461 12,239 South America 135,324 62,520 131, 4S6 269,465 Hawaiian Islands 18,434 22,204 37,714 63,654 Australasia 35,838 37,340 8,140 13,172 Philippine Islands 29,571 34,531 99,931 148,729 Far East 193, 50S 259,593 98,445 133,290 Canada intercoastal 20,613 10,000 East coast Canada and: United States 3.640 6,504 Australasia 14,629 10,144 5,109 7,372 Far East 6.985 10,858 East coast Central America/Mexico and Far East — 12,932 24,021 South America intercoastal 1,434 1,394 2,960 3,885 East coast South America and: United States 3,554 6,400 Canada 3,777 5,400 Philippine Islands 5.396 7,624 Far East 21,346 23,391 6,433 3.38S Cristobal and: Central America/Mexico 1,946 1,404 2,576 3,262 South America 11,074 9,580 10,696 10,962 West Indies and: United States 4,489 Canada 2,108 2,989 4,557 6,940 South America 19,057 26,138 Balboa 12,037 21,665 4,489 Europe and: United States 31,957 700 22,059 35,975 Canada 85,034 21.034 109.452 182,038 s South America 22,613 I *. 433 36.619 57.39S Australasia 74,379 34,318 S5.488 80,900 Far East 10,207 14,356 Africa and west coast Canada 10,600 14,250 Around the world 14,652 12,317 6,418 7,991 Foreign vessels in ballast (United States intercoastal'l 13,57!
