In the third season under the guidance of Head Coach Eric Alsop, the Saints have taken on an international flavor and expectations 2 are on the rise. With a new team and a new field, Alsop expects his team to be a contender in 2005. Of the nineteen recruits that Alsop has brought in this season, eight are 0 international student-athletes. Fans can expect that European flavor to add plenty of spark to the Limestone roster in 2005. “I’m extremely excited about the tremendous potential of this year’s squad,” Alsop said. “We had a very successful recruiting year and we have a talented mix of American and international newcomers to add to our 0 experienced returning players.” The new Saints Field played a major role in bringing in such a deep and talented recruiting class. Saints Field has undergone a major renovation 5 since last season. An irrigation system has been added, and the stadium has been enclosed by netting. Those upgrades along with a brick seating area have made Saints Field one of the top facilities in the Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference. Alsop’s squad is so talented and has so much depth that he has moved last year’s top goal scorer to the defense. Senior captain Jason Baker (Dacula, GA) heads up a talented returning core. Baker will lead the defense this year, O and, after starting at forward in the past, will be able to provide support to the attack as well. Last season, Baker led the team in both goals (3) and points (6). Sophomore Kyle Murray (Goucester, VA) and junior Nathan Brines (Concord, NC) will also help anchor the defense. U After red-shirting last season, Timmy Costanzo (Mt. Pleasant, SC) will be a staple in this year’s offense. Two years ago, Costanzo was named Gatorade Player of the Year after leading Wando High School to a #1 ranking in South Carolina and a #2 ranking in the nation. He has incredible goal scoring potential, and Alsop is excited to have him on the field after a year of working behind the scenes as a red-shirt. Costanzo will help lead an offense T that will return each of the top three goal-scorers from last season. Baker has moved to the defense, but sophomore forward Landon Brice (Myrtle Beach, SC) and junior midfielder David Ash (James Island, SC) will continue to try to put the ball in the net. Brice made an immediate impact as a freshman in 2004. He started in all 16 games and scored two goals and assisted on a third. Ash also recorded two goals and an assist and has tallied ten points in his young career. L Among those talented international players are Tom Beattie (Goole, England), Joel Moran (Kinross, Scotland), Sean Boyle (Galway, Ireland), and Adam Ennis O (Symington, Scotland). Each of these four comes to Limestone with an impressive resume and will be outstanding freshmen for the Saints. Ennis will aid Costanzo at the forward position. He is O strong on the tackle and likes to move into the attack. He possesses a powerful shot that will keep opposing goalkeepers guessing. Adam was a team captain and the top goal scorer for his Merchiston Castle team that reached K 3 SAINTS SOCCER Limestone College Men’s Soccer 2005 Outlook the quarter finals of the Scottish Cup last season. Beattie is an attacking midfielder with incredible presence on the field and will be a constant threat to any defense. In England, Beattie has been a team 2 captain for both Goole United and the prestigious Hull City Boys team. Moran will play outside midfield. His speed and quickness make him a dangerous asset on the flanks. Moran was a team captain for his Kinross team that reached the Regional semifinal of the 0 Scottish Cup and also captained St. Johnstone to the U-19 Scottish League Championship. Boyle is a defensive midfielder who is very composed on the ball and will help control the midfield. Boyle is a former All-Ireland selection and led his Presentation Convent team to two national titles. 0 Another newcomer, sophomore keeper Ryan Robinson (Snellville, GA), has already earned the rank of team captain. Robinson comes to Limestone via Augusta State University. He is a very talented and 5 very experienced goalkeeper who has proven himself to be a great leader on and off the field. Forward, Liam Brown (Coatbridge, Scotland), midfielder Bradley Northrop (Bradford, England), and defender Will Austin (Stewarton, Scotland) round out the new international pool at Limestone. O th The Saints were picked 9 in the CVAC Preseason Coaches Poll. However, with a wealth of fresh talent, and keeping in mind that the Saints have returned each of their top three goal-scorers, the Saints rightfully expect to be a threat in the conference ranks. U “It has been a long process,” Alsop commented, “but we finally feel like we have got both a team and a facility that we can be proud of. We have come together quickly during the preseason, and we are T ready to face some outside competition. I think that we are going to surprise a lot of programs this season and the future looks very bright for us. We are still a young squad and the majority of our core will be playing together for at least the next three seasons. It is an exciting L time for Limestone Men’s Soccer, not only this season, but also in years to come.” O O K 4 SAINTS SOCCER Limestone College Men’s Soccer 2005 Roster SAINTS BY POSITION Defense (12): Will Austin, Jason Baker, Nathan Brines, Patrick Burnett, Trey Burns, Adam Ennis, Nick Gumpert, Chris Lotito, Steve Martin, Kyle Murray, Christian Peel, Giancarlo Rodriguez: Midfield (12): David Ash, Tom Beattie, Bryan Blom, Sean Boyle, Timmy Costanzo, Jason Dabrowski, Joseph Federspiel, Kwadwo Frempong, Joel Moran, Christian Munn, Bradley Northrop, Eric Sajowitz: Forward (5): Landon No Name Pos Yr Ht Wt Hometown Previous School Brice, Liam Brown, Jamie Cox, 00 Tom Mikulski GK Fr 6-5 210 Nutley, NJ Nutley HS Steve Jones, Wesley Seaburg: 0 Kyle Schmaltz GK Fr 6-2 175 Goose Creek, SC Stratford, HS Goalkeeper (3): Tom Mikulski, 1 Ryan Robinson GK So 6-2 180 Snellville, GA Augusta State Ryan Robinson, Kyle Schmaltz. 2 Liam Brown F Fr 6-1 170 Coatbridge, Scotland Greenock HS SAINTS BY YEAR 4 David Ash M Jr 5-10 157 James Island, SC James Island HS 5 Tom Beattie M Fr 6-0 160 Goole, England Vermuyden School Seniors (2): Jason Baker, Trey Burns: Juniors (6): David Ash, 6 Trey Burns D Sr 5-10 160 Hoschton, GA Dacula HS Nathan Brines, Kwadwo 7 Nathan Brines D Jr 5-10 185 Concord, NC Central Cabarrus HS Frempong, Nick Gumpert, 8 Joel Moran M Fr 5-9 150 Kinross, Scotland Kinross HS Christian Munn, Eric Sajowitz: 9 Sean Boyle M Fr 6-0 160 Galway, Ireland Calasanctius College Sophomores (8): Landon 10 Kyle Murray D So 5-8 170 Goucester, VA Gloucester HS Brice, Jamie Cox, Joseph 11 Landon Brice F So 6-0 180 Myrtle Beach, SC Myrtle Beach HS Federspiel, Steve Jones, Kyle 12 Steve Jones F So 5-11 185 Linthicum, MD Anne Arundel CC Murray, Ryan Robinson, 13 Timmy Costanzo M Fr 5-6 150 Mt.
