Washington, D.C, 17 April 2019: The historic Mujibnagar Day was observed at Bangladesh Embassy in Washington D.C. Wednesday remembering the establishment of Bangladesh Provisional Government on APRIL 17 in 1971 that successfully led the nation’s war of independence to its cherished end under the supreme leadership of the father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. This is the first government of Bangladesh. The legal and constitutional basis of the Mujibnagar government was provided by the Proclamation of Independence Order of Bangladesh on 10 April 1971 adopted by the elected representatives. The Mujibnagar government took oath at Baidyanathtala mango grove later renamed as Mujibnagar in the then Meherpur subdivision of Kushtia district to command the war of liberation and mobilize international opinion in favor of Bangladesh’s independence. The day’s program include discussion on the significance of day and read out of messages of Hon’ble President Abdul Hamid and Hon’ble Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Wreaths were placed at the bust of the father of the nation. Bangladesh Ambassador to the U.S.A. Mohammad Ziauddin chaired the discussion held at Bangabandhu Auditorium. It was addressed, among others, by Minister (Press) of the Embassy Shamim Ahmad. Ambassador Ziauddin paid rich tributes to the father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman for his farsighted and courageous leadership to lead the nation to the much cherished independence. Describing the formation of the Mujibnagar government as a milestone of the war of independence, the Ambassador recalled the able leadership of Syed Nazrul Islam, the acting president and Tajuddin Ahmed, the prime minister of the Mujibnagar government, who steered the war towards its successful culmination.
