Mortlach and District Overview The Mortlach and District community consists of the Villages of Mortlach and Caronport, and the Hamlets of Caron and Parkbeg. It serves the rural municipalities of Wheatlands No. 163 and Caron No. 162. Along with Caronport, Mortlach functions as a hub for the surrounding rural communities. It provides educational facilities (school and public library) and recreational activities (clog dancing lessons, baseball, hockey, seniors association, Star Players, rink, golf course, restaurants). The nearest RCMP detachment is in Moose Jaw, and the Caronport Fire Department serves much of the surrounding rural area. The nearest convenience store is in Caronport, and residents must travel to Moose Jaw for other shopping. Village of Mortlach Size and Location The Village of Mortlach is a community of 261 people located in the south-central part of Saskatchewan, forty kilometers west of Moose Jaw on the Trans Canada Highway. • The land area of the Village of Mortlach is 2.76 square kilometers, and the population density is 94.5 people per square kilometer. • Mortlach is situated in the Rural Municipality of Wheatland. • Thunder Creek passes the village to the north, where it is joined by Sandy Creek. Facts about Mortlach • The Frenchman’s trail, was an integral part of the early history of the Mortlach region. It led buffalo hunters, traders, surveyors, and homesteaders to the southwest. • After emigrating from Scotland, the first president of the Canadian Pacific Railway, George Stephen, chose the name Mortlach, naming it after his parish in Scotland. • The town site was established on land originally belonging to Khamis Michael, who immigrated from what is now Iraq. • Mortlach was incorporated as a village in 1906, and attained town status in 1913, but the population steadily declined and the town reverted to village status in 1949. • On May 29, 1914, a ship named the Empress of Ireland sank on its first trip down the St. Lawrence River, resulting in the deaths of 1,012 people. A young Mortlach family and another man from Mortlach were among the decreased. Only the body of four-year-old Edith Hart was recovered, and she is buried in the Mortlach Cemetary. • In 1954, Boyd Wettlaufer from the University of Regina did a landmark archaeological excavating in the Mortlach area, uncovering evidence of several cultures that had previously occupied the area, dating back to 1445 BC. • Mortlach is twinned with its namesake in Scotland, which is now called Dufftown. • Mortlach was home to the Mortlach Fiddlers, who travelled all over Saskatchewan to perform. They recorded eight albums that are still available for purchase in Mortlach. • Everybody loves purple teeth!
