He recommended that: Newspapers should be obliged to print corrections and apologies when they get things wrong The new regulator should have the power to investigate serious breaches of standards There should be a relatively fast and free alternative to the courts, for members of the public who feel have been libelled, harassed or had their privacy intruded upon In return, newspapers that agreed to be part of an independent and effective system would be protected from some of the high costs and damages of legal action against them.
