The Congressmen is the Ranking member on the Health, Employment, Labor and Pensions Subcommittee. He is an advocate for the Affordable Care Act and spoke with attendees about the positives of the laws and the problems that need to be addressed to improve it. Under Powelson’s tenure, Pennsylvania is a national leader on natural gas development and infrastructure improvement. He discussed the impact of natural gas prices on the region and offered insight into regulating emerging technologies. Powelson discussed the impact of shale gas on Pennsylvania's and the regions economy. There were 1102 registrants in attendance (compared to 1016 in 2012; 1005 in 2011; 1031 in 2010; and 896 in 2009) representing state utility commissions, consumer groups, the utility industry, and financial institutions. Out of 1102 registrants, 130 were state utility commissioners representing 48 state commissions. Only Delaware and Virginia did not have commissioners in attendance.
