Unemployed? Underemployed? Empty-nester? Considering a social services career? Or simply want to work on your inner glow? If so, consider becoming a Glenner Guardian Angel. Unlike Curtis Sliwa’s NYC-based Guardian Angels, no need to wear a red beret or practice martial arts. Join former Chargers Nick Hardwick, Saturday, May 30, at the Live Well San Diego 5K in Point Loma’s NTC Park. Director of Guardian Angels Program Mark Maxwell and Glenner colleagues Lisa Tyburski and Amber Avery-Lewallen—director of family services and project manager, respectively—will be on hand to explain how Guardian Angels help San Diegan seniors stay connected, and live happier, healthier lives. The family-friendly run/walk starts at 8 am and benefits HHSA’s Polinsky Children’s Center Trust Fund for children in foster care. “Give us just a few hours a month and we’ll show you how easy it is to be a guardian angel,” says Anette Asher, president and CEO of Glenner Memory Care Centers. Glenner operates three community-based centers and administers the Guardian Angels community outreach program. Designed to minimize the isolation elderly persons may experience after loss of a spouse, illness or disability, angels visit seniors at residential care facilities throughout the county. "I lost my mother to Alzheimer's two years ago and was searching for a way to help other families struggling with the disease," explains Tyburski. "A friend suggested I contact Glenner to see how I could help. I learned about the Guardian Angels program, loved what I saw and immediately enrolled. I was so impressed with what Glenner does to help families that I soon was working here full-time. I am now honoring my mother while helping other families. It couldn't be a better fit!" There are many ways to get involved, says Maxwell. “Activities assistants call bingo numbers or facilitate a game of bridge. Volunteers encourage seniors to participate in tai chi or other fitness classes. Angels also assist at health fairs, help manage our Facebook page, recruit and train other angels, or simply engage a senior in a friendly chat. No matter what the contribution, all make a difference in someone’s life.” About Glenner The nonprofit Glenner Memory Care Centers provides specialized day programs for adults of any age with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia, including veterans with brain injuries. Glenner also offers support groups and other resources to help San Diegans caring for loved ones with memory disorders. Glenner has been providing these sorely needed services for more than 32 years. Three licensed centers—in San Diego (Hillcrest), North County (Encinitas) and South County (Chula Vista)—provide memory-impaired individuals with specially designed daytime activities and wellness programs. Participants enjoy meals, music and fun in a safe, secure homelike setting in a medically supervised, professionally run facility. Family members get a much-needed break and peace of mind. Founded in 2001—and funded through the Aging & Independence Services division of the County of San Diego’s Health & Human Services Agency, (HHSA/AIS)—the Guardian Angels program pairs fully vetted volunteers with isolated seniors living in residential facilities, many of whom have outlived friends and family or live far from loved ones. Angels now operate in more than 150 service sites countywide. Angels volunteer for many reasons: to foster a connection with a parent or grandparent-like figure; or learn if a career in geriatrics, home health or social services is right for them. Whatever their motivation, human and animal (certified pets only please!) angels bring joy to themselves and others. Email [email protected] to volunteer.
